Brake squeal won’t go away

The brakes on my 09 started squealing at 36k miles. I was in a hurry so I just slapped on a new set of pads. I didn't get a hundred miles before the squeal was back. So I took them apart again, but this time I used the red anti-squeal stuff, greased the metal clips, and scuffed the rotors with rough sandpaper. The squeak was back within a week. NAPA told me the problem was that I didn't machine the rotors. So I took them back apart, machined the rotors, used the red stuff... And they still squeak! What am I missing? I think the pitch of the squeal has differed each time I've taken it apart and the speed at which they squeak has varied as well. It's embarrassing.

Thanks,

Rich

Sorry, they squeal, not squeak.

In a panic stop, they make no noise at all. Currently, under normal braking conditions, they start to squeal when the car reaches about 20 mph. Applying more pressure on the pedal makes the squeak go away, but then you risk being rear ended. The noise continues until the car comes to a stop.

Before I had the rotors machined, the noise was only on the last couple of mph before coming to a stop. They also squealed for just an instant when accelerating away from a complete stop.

I cannot tell you which side the sound is coming from. I know it is not a loose part because I know what that sounds like from personal experience during this process. My understanding is that squeals are a function of vibrations, which is why I think it is odd that the vehicle speed at onset has changed so much throughout the ordeal.

That's what I was afraid you were doing to say. It's been 30 years since I rebuilt a rotor, but that is what YouTube is for, right! The worst part is that the rebuild kit from NAPA is only $3.33. BY FAR the cheapest part of this process.

THANK YOU!

I am wondering if it may be the new pads. Did you perhaps get semi metallic or metallic pads? Ceramic pads should be quiet.
