Default Camry Engine versus Scion tC Engine..

I have a 2005 Scion tC and I bought it off some guy on Facebook.
The Engine has junkyard writing on it and I’m worried if there is a Camry motor in it.

How can I tell the difference between the tC motor and the Camry motor?

A good place to start would be to find the Engine Serial Number, which is located around to the right of the exhaust manifold I believe and look it up.
I wanna say that the engine is most likely a Scion tC engine because it would be hard to swap a Camry engine in.
They might both use 2AZ-FE engines but the have different mounting areas and I believe they have different exhaust manifolds as well as intake manifolds.

One way I can think of that you could tell a difference between if it is a tC motor or Camry motor is that the timing covers are different between the tC engine and Camry Engine.

Edit: Forgot they could just swap the timing cover. I would say if the car runs and drives fine and to not worry about it.

So are there other cars one can pull a motor from, or is tCs only?

The cars that use the 2az-fe (tC's engine) are
[North America]
Scion tC (2005–2010)
Scion xB (2008–2015)
Toyota Camry (2002–2009)
Toyota Solara "Camry" (2002–200
Toyota Highlander (2001–2007)
Toyota RAV4 (2004–2007)
Toyota Corolla XRS (2009–2010)
Toyota Matrix S (2009–2011)
Pontiac Vibe (2009–2010)

So if I had to guess, there is no was real way to know if someone has done the piston ring service. So if one wanted to buy a used engine it would be best to fine one out of the following?

Scion tC (2010)
Scion xB (2010–2015)
Toyota Corolla XRS (2010)
Toyota Matrix S (2010–2011)

Yes, there is no real way to know if someone has done the piston ring service unless you tear the engine down to look. It would probably be best to find one out of those four with the tC and xB being your best option.

I thought the XRS has VVTL-i ? Didn't know it was packing the same power plant, I wonder what it would take to incorporate valve lifting into the tC?

The Corolla XRS only had the 2ZZ-GE (VVTL-i) in the (05-06). The Corolla XRS's that came after had the 2AZ-FE, which was a disappointment.

Then from (08-10), the XRS came back with the 2AZ-FE and then was discontinued in 2011 (US markets).

Yeah, the 2ZZ-GE really was a beast
The moderator edits our post for grammar corrections and other corrections. I think simplifying questions as well, I can't really say?

Default Swap a xB Engine for a tC Engine?

I have an 2008 xB. That's got the knock from the oil consumption. The recall is over.
Can't get it fixed that way. You can not find these xB's in Pick n Pull type yards.
tC's I can find all day.

My questions are: Can you swap engines with just doing a timing cover and a few sensors?

I recently put an '05 Rav4 engine in my '06 tC. I also own an '06 Camry. The only differences between a tC 2AZ-FE and others are so minor they are not worth mentioning, like timing cover. One major difference can be the driving habits of tC versus Camry owners. You're probably better off with the Camry motor. I drive my tC like an idiot, and my Camry like Gramma.
