05 xA Charcoal Canister issues
Issue: Bad Canister. Problem: Don't want to spend $250 to replace. Also, can't take old canister off because of one hose that is driving me nuts... it is from the round approx 2" cylinder on top of the canister that connects a hose that feeds vapors to the tank. How do you get that blasted thing off? It has a 90 degree bend close to the connection, and two tabs that stick out inviting you to push them in and pull it off, but it will not budge.
Anywho... I got a canister from a salvage yard from an '06 xB thinking it would work and they are slightly different. Is there any way to adapt it?
And... what to do in the meantime? I've heard of tank implosions from the pressure, and with all hoses connected, I can't fill my tank and the pressure released when I remove the cap is intense. Currently, I am driving with a hose undone. What are the potential consequences?

After reading all of the similar posts, will a new canister be a better bet than a salvage yard - have they improved the part? Is a band-aid like adding a hose to the vent opening a viable solution to extend the life of the part?

I find getting parts here can be cheaper than the local auto stores

Sometimes the fit is not exact though. There is a purge valve back there too
Also, you may get lucky and disconnect the electrical connectors, soak them in WD40, put them back together and stuff suddenly starts working again. It's the old Nintendo cartridge problem - corrosion on the contacts.
Extrapolate that issue to driverless cars

Did your gas tank stop accepting gas from the pump? That happened to me on my xB. Had to keep pulling the lever and having it stop - took forever to fill a tank. I caved and let the dealer fix it because my local mechanic wouldn't touch it.

Wow! couldn't fill the tank? My daughter had that happen on her Ford Fiesta, with it's no cap filling system - which is where the above tip about WD40ing the connectors came from.
I have heard of spiders and bugs blocking vent lines (as fuel goes in, air has to come out of the tank), but cleaning the connectors off did the trick for her. All vent lines were clear.
