Is my 2005 Scion xB worth repairing?
I received some bad news today from a mechanic I trust. Looks like my 2005 Scion xB with 156,000 miles on it needs an $800 exhaust job.
Whole system is shot. Wondering if the car is worth repairing? I love the car and have owned it since 2011.
It is in decent shape other than some surface rust near the roof and, like all Scion xBs, the clutch is a little bit soft.
Ideas? Should I spend the @?

$800 for an entire exhaust job!? Whats needed? Everything including the header? Walker part number KIT10271511 is a full header back exhaust replacement is $160 on rockauto. If you do need a replacement header, thats $112 on the same site.
If you're even the slightest bit mechanically inclined, replacing the entire system shouldnt take more than an afternoon with simple hand tools.

The mechanic said that I need a new catalytic converter and some other item as well. Basically the whole system needs replaced. What sort of tools do you need?
I also don't have a way of getting the vehicle up on a lift (wondering if there is anyplace in the DC area one can rent a bay for an afternoon) and I would give it a try. I love my xB and want to keep it.

Tools are simple ratchets, pry bar, PB Blaster. Impact gun if you're feeling fancy.
When I did the header and header back exhaust install on my xB, I did it on the ground. Jacked front end up, put on jack stands. did work i needed to in the front, dropped it back down. Jacked up rear, buttoned up the back end, dropped it back down.

In general, it's usually cheaper to repair a car than buy a new one - specially if you are going to buy second hand rather than new
For example the new to you car could also need a new exhaust system or some other repair that you don't know about...
You will need to do the math comparing the cost of repair verses the cost of the new car and don't forget all the title transfer costs etc etc.
DIY reduces the cost of repair significantly, but you must know your limits on what you can and can't repair yourself.
Another reason to sell a car is you want something different

Does the $800 fee sound reasonable for repair? Also, my car has 156,000 miles on it and its the original clutch.
How long do manual transmissions last on 05 xB's?

Manual transmissions should last longer than the engine, the clutch is a part that might wear out as it's a dry clutch.
Best to not slip it too much, try and engage it at low rpm and let the engine do the acceleration. Hard to do on hill starts
"Power" starts - high rpm, slipping like crazy - that clutch will wear out fast
If you got it to 165K on the original, you know what you are doing.

Exhaust shop for Scion xB?
Anyone know of a good exhaust shop in the DC area to replace the exhaust on my 2005 xB?
I feel a little out of my depth to do it myself.
