Default '06 xB, transmission flush or change?

Toyota wants $319.00 to change the transmission oil. A local reputable tire guy wants $200.00 to flush.

I'm assuming "change" means remove and clean the drain pan and new filter? And that "flush" mean to drain as much as possible via the dip stick hole? Yes?

I bought my '06 xB nearly new. It has has 61,000 miles.

Flush/change? recommendations

I would ask both of them exactly what is included...I'm betting you find out the $319 Toyota 'change' is the same flush you're getting from the other guy for $200.

Both have down sides. Toyota's "change" may not replace the fluid that's trapped in the torque converter. The up side is your mileage is low and changing part of the fluid is better than changing none.

Auto trans flushes are risky business. You can dislodge trash that might go on to damage your transmission. Your particular ride requires a specific ATF. Your tire guy might have the specific fluid but I wouldn't count on it without asking. The wrong fluid could damage your transmission.

Skip the tire guy, and skip Toyota. Go to a Transmission shop, they do this stuff all day long. You don't want to "flush" the fluid, you want to drain and refill. People who get it flushed don't know what they're in for, that's just a word they've heard and reiterated. Drain/Refill.
