Default First Drive: 2008 Scion xD

http://www.caranddriver.com/previews...-scion-xd.html

With the new car comes a new personality: the xD is way more fun and, yes, far more cool than the xA. Whereas the older car needed a bunch of bolt-ons to look decent, the xD, which shares more than a passing resemblance to the equally new, second-generation xB, wears sheetmetal that’s handsome from the get-go.

All I can say is I am 100% impressed with this car. The ride and handling are fantastic. After riding in an xA, there is no comparrison between any of the cars as it is all of its own.
Once again thank you Scot, and was an honor to talk with yourself, Steve and Wade over lunch yesterday.

Its good to know that it shifts well. Nothing worse than a sloppy gearbox. Hopefully the TRD shifter will make it even better.

When you think Scion, you think ‘cool,’ right? (Okay, maybe you think something along the lines of ‘brain-dead teenagers driving ridiculous-looking cars’, but just play along.)
This guy seem a bias right from the start. I always hate it when people try to label the xA as dorky, that like saying my opinion is better than your opinion.

In reference to the xA he says,
It was so not cool.
The guy sounds more like a high school fashion queen than some one who is reviewing a car.

I'm sure xD is an excelnt car just like all toyota/scion cars. Since the xD has a beefyer engine I would imagine the ride is a lot nicer than the xA. All in all this is a nice review but I could have done without the constant xA bashing.

I agree, I LOVED the xA, I would pick one up in a year or two if they still had new ones avail. I was bent on purchasing the xA, but we decided on the xB since we have no "big" cars. The xB is the biggest car we have. >_>

i LOVE the xA, too. that is why i bought one before they are gone forever.

The xA was seriously dorky, drove every bit like the cheap econocar it was, and, let’s face it, wasn’t much for the eyes—it looked like a melted stack of pancakes. It was so not cool
yeah, that is harsh
I think caranddriver ( ) point of view is about POWER, more power more cool.

Nice ride, not a cool review with the xA bashing. I drive a tC but I also like the looks of the xA and xB. Would be nice to see some pics of the xD interior.

Personally, I prefer the looks of the xA (and its apparently superior fuel efficiency). I really ought to hold off judgment until I have a chance to see one in person, but I just can't help it. I'm sure the beefier engine won't hurt sales, though.

FWIW, according to fueleconomy.gov, the xA would get 27/34 (man) and 27/35 (auto) under the 2008 fuel efficiency standards, as compared to the xD's 27/33 (man) and 26/32 (auto).

I said it last year and I'll show it again, how different is it from the overall design of a hundred other little econo sports -I must admit two things here - I haven't seen the xD "in person" nor did I like the review. When the xA first came out, visually it didn't appeal to me but as I saw more and more mods in our club, it kinda grew on me as a sportier version of the 3 xB Gen2s we have. Also, in speaking to sales people from two nearby Scion delaerships, Yaris has so far been a bust here in the northeast. Did Toyota Scion really need to introduce a new car that fits (no pun intended to the Honda Fit) into this category. They may have another bust on their hands, especially with some dealerships in this area having as many as 25 xAs still in stock.

BTW - Our family of cars

Useful review, I can't wait to drive one myself. And don't stress out over the author's tone; it's just the Car and Driver style.

It's a little difficult to sell 06's in mid 07.

The xD reminds me of a shrunken RAV. Which is kind of funny if you think about it because the xA reminds me very much of a shrunken Matrix. Either way, the xD may be viewed as better than the xA but you won't see me part with my RS1 anytime soon

I'm with you. If you love what you got, stick with it - that's why I went out and bought a third Gen 1 xB as soon as I saw the new xB. Just didn't appeal to me.

I'm impresssed. The tC used to be the only Scion that I though looked good, or even decent. Now I really like their whole line up.
