Stock steelies... dust caps needed for protection?
My neighbor (a man in his 50s and experienced with restoring and maintaining older vehicles) mentioned that I might want to get dust caps for my steelies, or at the very least add some grease around the center of the two front steelies. Reason was somewhere along the lines of keeping debris out, since the center of the two front steelies is more exposed?
Should I have dust caps there to keep water out as well? Is there grease inside the axle that is now exposed since I don't have my dust covers on?

I think this guy speaks from his experience with early style bearings. The modern ones are sealed and only the axle nut is exposed along with the threaded part if the axle/outer CV joint. Shure it is nice to get a dust cover if you can find one, but it is not a big deal not to. Just packing grease there will cause it to shoot all around your rim since there is no cap holding it in.
I am not sure they are needed---but take a look at this post and see how they along with trim rings can enhance the steelies:
