20-year-old captures abusive police officer on tape
September 11, 2007
A 20-year old male turned the tables on an abusive police officer in St. George, Missouri after he was pulled over inside a commuter parking lot by officer Sgt. James Kuehnlein of the St. George police department.
The St. Louis, Missouri man, Brett Darrow, 20, had installed a hidden camera inside his car, much like the way some police officers do, and caught the entire incident on tape. Darrow then posted the video on the internet on places like YouTube.com.
In the beginning of the nearly 13 minute video, the police officer states that Darrow was being pulled over because his vehicle "seemed suspicious." Officer Kuehnlein claims that high crime rates in the lot caused Darrow to be pulled over.
Kuehnlein then asks Darrow to step out of the car and asks to see his ID. Darrow then asks what he did wrong and Kuehnlein then blows up on the boy saying "do you want to try me? Do you want to try me tonight? You think you had a bad night? I will ruin your **** night. Try me young boy."
Kuehnlein then threatens to send Darrow to jail for "some **** reason I come up with" and we'll "see who knows the law better. Don't ever get smart mouth with a cop again or I will show you what a cop does." Kuehnlein then begins to threaten Darrow with a list of false charges such as resisting arrest. He can also "come up with nine other things" for every one thing Darrow can come up with. Kuehnlein then tells Darrow that he was being ticketed for not using a turn signal to turn into the lot, but the video clearly proves the officer wrong.
During the entire incident, Darrow barely spoke a word as the officer threatened him saying "I just had a bad night."
Darrow is then allowed to go, but only after Kuehnlein notices the camera, and not before threatening Darrow some more saying "I don't really care about your cameras, 'cause I'm about ready to tow your car, then we can tear 'em all apart."
After the video was posted on the internet, people from all over started to call the police department and complain about the officers actions.
"I was very displeased when I saw the actions on the video. My officers are not trained and taught to act like that," said Scott Uhrig, chief of the St. George police who added "someone either violated the law or they didn't. You don't say, I'll lock you up and then come up with why afterward."
Darrow states that he did not take the video to the police chief because he thought the whole thing would be forgotten and "swept under the rug. I wanted everybody to see that this kind of stuff does happen."
Pending an investigation of the incident, Kuehnlein was suspended without pay.

No way no how was he doing anything wrong, smartass or not the cop should NOT be speaking to him like that, I just can't STAND when police officers think that they are above the law of respect and authority. Bothers the ____ out of me.
I still want to know about the chirping and ticking. Is it some kind of radar detector? It seems to increase just with the police car being close. I really want one.
Btw, you don't even need to have a hidden camera. I know someone who rides with a fixed camera using a mount which sits in the place of the passenger seat headrest. It's blatantly obvious, but carrying a camera is not a crime. It keeps the cops on their best behavior.

Well my buddy actually has a bracket that goes in place of where the headrest should be. It uses two legs to slot into the headrest holes (I think they might be the legs taken right off of the headrest), and it has a crossbeam to support the camera.
Btw, when you get pulled over, you are not required to explain why you have a camera. However, it will ____ off the cops if you try to be smart, so my buddy always says he is returning home from the track and he was filming his run.

most cops are actually nice if you are kind and truthfull to them , than they are to you . for example i was pulled over for speeding i was like yes i know i was speeding a bit im not going to lie. and the cop actually let me go after running my info .
just goes to show most cops are not _______s!

I would agree, most are doing what they should ... but they really need to pay closer attention to what goes on. For example recording their whole shift on audio. This would be beneficial for EVERYONE, but they would never do that though, quite simply because it would then record everything they say ... invasion of privacy? I dont think so, these are the people that are supposed to be protecting us and holding up the law not breaking it.
I have thought about installing audio recorders in my car for when I do get pulled over just so I have it, but I have never received a ticket yet.

Yeah, cops aren't all bad. Most of the times when I have been pulled over, I have been let go with a warning. I once got pulled over for tints and no license plate by the SAME COP who gave me two tickets for the same offences about two months prior. He still remembered me. He asked me to explain myself, and I just said, "well, right after you gave me the first tickets, I got the violations fixed, and then I got the windows tinted again and I removed the plate again". He said, "so you didn't learn anything, huh?" I said, "it's not that I didn't learn my lesson, but I just think the car looks much better this way". He said he appreciated my honesty and thanks for not insulting his intelligence with excuses. He gave me just a warning that time.
I've been pulled over numerous times and I have always been apologetic and sincere to the officers. I always start the conversation in a polite tone and call the officer "Sir". Twice I clearly knew what I did, speeding and u-turn. Both I got off with a warming.
And for those who are wondering, I'm a race that people always say get picked on by cops. I have never been searched or beaten (knock on wood). The way you talk to a cop has a BIG effect on the outcome.

Screw that sir crap. He is going to take my money, no way I'm saying sir. I don't curse them and I don't ask questions. I just do what they say and answer questions.
That cop is typical of how I think of cops, BTW. They get into it because they have small man syndrome and that badge makes them high and mighty.
I hope they stick him in a cell with someone he put in jail.
