While there is some back-country in Europe, most people live pretty close to the cities, so there is little need for a full blown SUV. Just like in North America where all sorts of people drive smaller sport utes around in the city, Toyota is ramping up a small SUV for Europe that will be based on the 2006 Urban Cruiser concept.
As you may or may not know (I didn't know until I read this story), the Toyota Ist is actually based on the Scion xD which urban cruises around in the United States. The variant of the Urban Cruiser - pictured here -- that will eventually find its way to Europe will be similar in nature, getting slotted beneath the larger Toyota RAV4.
It'll be interesting to see what kind of powertrain options will be made available, seeing how 4WD and AWD aren't exactly necessary in the city. Well, unless you're urban cruising around in the snow in Oslo or something. We''l find out at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

A man after my own heart. Maybe when the engine details are released there'll be info on a diesel. I don't expect Scion to have diesels in the US, but Toyota could.
And to answer the question a few messages up--the EU gets all the cool cars because the US is obsessed with big SUVs. And since they are cheaper to build and have a higher profit margin, the auto companies are glad to oblige. Unfortunately, fuel will have to pass the $4.00 mark for it to sink in here.

aw man... i so want a nice small car after this. i feel no need for a bigger car! i wouldnt mind a faster car...but small can be fast! (porshe). i dont know if id want a desiel though, theres not too many desiel sellers around here.
im diggin the scion fuse style headlights, look like multiple led's (prolly are), give it a bbm paint job and i would roll around in one, so the rear doors are like rx 8 3 door where you have to open the front door first, if they left it a coupe would be a lot nicer
I don't like it - the hood reminds me of one of my old beetles - clamshell effect, and I don't like the forward slanting of the rear side window. It irritates my design sensibilities. But it's a Toyota product and therefore would be well made and reliable.
