Strange frontend noise
Hey gang. I have an aweful metal to metal noise coming from what seems to be both sides of the front. It happens mostly and most loudly when I am backing up downhill and hit the brake to stop. I am a mechanic for BMW and also had two other techs look under it. We cant find anything out of the ordinary worn out. The rear motormount seems aweful loose but we cant see that it is hitting anything. All of the balljoints and sway links have zero play. Anyone have any ideas?

this will sound real stupid, but obvious... did anyone look at the tabs on the front breaks, to make sure that they are not rubbing on the rotors? although the pad at a glance may appear to have anough meat on it, you would not pull the wheels to look at the "change your breaks now" tabs..
If it sounds like a rail car brake, metal on metal, or a nail on a chaulk board, its the brakes. Have you tried jacking the front of the ground and working it in gear and or riding the brakes to better pin point the sound?
