TOKYO (AFP) — Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it would soon equip vehicles with a system to verify that drivers' eyes are fully open to make sure they are not asleep at the wheel.
It has given its pre-crash safety system the eye-monitoring function in addition to its current ability to watch the direction of a driver's face, the company said.
The eye monitoring, billed as a world first by Toyota, will be offered in vehicles scheduled for launch in Japan in the near future.
It "uses a driver-monitoring camera and image-processing computer to determine the position of the driver's upper and lower eyelids," Japan's largest automaker said in a statement.
If the safety system senses that a collision is imminent, it issues an early warning to the driver.

As for technological features, this is on the forefront. However you just raised an interesting point bluaeon. We still aren't sure if this feature will be standard or an option, or when something likes this will be available on US models. It seems as though they are starting it in Japan first to see how consumers will react.

This won't help if you just fall asleep at the wheel. No amount of alarms, buzzing, vibration, etc will stop a sleepy driver.
I give them credit though but a sleepy driver will still continue to drive...

Take that one step further and integrate the lexus selfpark technology and the car can literally pull you over while slowing down ..

I think slowing down the car could also be detrimental because what about the people behind that driver? It sounds great but still a sleepy driver is going to fall asleep. It should just go into auto mode and drive the nearest hotel or something...

mercedes already has a car that can practically drive itself. all you do is hold the wheel. it measures traffic, and can stop and accelerate as needed. whats happening to our world! no one will drive cars anymore. stupid technology. it kind of grosses me out. i mean amen for the safety but still. why not put everyone in government remote controlled cars?
