Lip kit...
Hey guys I just picked up a ABS Dynamic Lip kit, I got it from a guy off of a local craigslist BRAND NEW for $200, think I got a good deal (not sure how much it usually goes for) but anywhew I need to get it painted first. I went to a couple body shops around town and they all quoted me $600 to paint the whole kit, mostly because they said my paint (BCP) cost more and is harder to mix. There isnt a maaco near my area so the only solution for a cheaper paint job is earl scheib... Now I know they are known for their cheap paint jobs but do you guys think that its a good idea? If I do I plan on buying the OEM paint from a toyota dealership and just pay them to paint it. I want some other opinions tho cuz you guys know your stuff. So please let me know what you guys think.
i actually can't believe i'm saying this...but did you try getting a painting quote from the dealer...i remember mine offered to paint a buddy club 2 kit for me (if i ever got it, but not thinking about it anymore for the record), and they quoted me 450 to color match BCP
No I went to two body shops an they both said $600 and thats if I installed it myself... Im gonna go check out earl scheib tommorow an see what they have or else my lip kits just gonna sit around an collect dust
Whatever you do, make sure you check out the new paint in the bright sun and at various different angles. Don't try inspecting the new paint indoors or in the shade.
I had a part painted to match my FM and it took two tries to get it just right.
The problem was in the "Mica" part of the Flint Mica. Apparently, the flakes in the paint can vary in color depending on what Lot number your paint guy orders for your job.
I went to pick up my part twice and I had to have them re-shoot it because the flakes in the paint didn't match. For example, the paint he used had greenish metallic flakes, while my car had blueish flakes.
Just be very careful and really take your time inspecting your pearl before forking over the cash.

Ok guys I dropped the pieces off at a well known body shop in my area, The guys quoted me $400. He was a real nice guy and honest, the only thing was that he said that eventually the paint would chip and peel because of the material it was, he said with the heat the type of plastic can flex causing the paint to chip, has anyone else heard of this or had any problems?
abs plastic is very rigid and light more like fiberglass than urethane which has alot of flex. flex should not be nearly as much of a problem with abs plastics and so you shouldn't have to worry too much about chipping as long as the shop you are at uses quality paint(e.g. sikkens, dupont) and has good techs.
Yeah they use dupont, they are a well known shop and like I said he was a real nice guy and he knew alot I could tell, hes been doing it for over 25 years. He was the only one that took the time to explain to me what needed to be done and that told me that thats why I went with his shop.
