Default Question on shocks and springs!

ever since i got my 17's, i've been wanting to drop the box.

but i know that if i got springs (let's say for example the tein s-tech) and just kept my stock shocks, the shocks would wear out faster due to the drop.

money-wise, would it be cheaper to buy springs, then replace the shocks when they wear out? (i.e. how much do aftermarket shocks cost?)

or just to save my money for coilovers?

hollerforadollar.

well.....
you can get a good set of shocks/struts for fairly cheep.
they recomend you change your shocks every 20k anyway.
coilovers are the way to go, but remember you get what you pay for.
tein makes a few nice sets of coilovers with great quality.
the Basic are about $800 for a full set and the SS and about $1000
it realy depends on what you want out of the box and how long you are planing on keeping it.

yeah.. i'm planning on keeping the the box for a while.. just got it 2 months ago.

with coilovers.. would i still have to worry about the shocks/struts?

and since i'm a noobie, i might as well ask,

what's the struts?
or if someone can break it down to me in lames-terms (sp?)
that'd be cool too =]

it would be cheaper to do the shocks and springs at the same time, unless you can install them yourself or with the help of your friends.

if you install them at the same time, you'll save on labor, whereas if you install springs first and then install the struts and shocks later, your paying probably about double the labor. so be patient, save up and do it all at once.

The coilovers replace the front struts and springs. Not sure if the rear coilovers replaces the shocks. I think the rear spring just becomes adjustable.

I have df210s on factory struts and shocks no problems. I've also run Eibach 1.3"drop with Monroe Sensatracks on my 01 Chevy Malibu for like 4 years and 70k miles no problems. Im gona keep running my df210s and factory suspension until it wears out thats a long was off. Easy 50-100k miles dont worry about it.

Yes ur good with that setup you will be happy. Most people think my xB has a less choppy ride with my df210s, and I do to but the ride will be more stiff with any lowering spring go cheap and see if you like it, if not a year or two down the road get diff struts shocks.

I agree I ran DF210's for a year with stock shocks and strut with no issue.

I did have to change out the swatbar endlink bushings (I think because of the drop) but that was very easy and only took 20min. I say do it at same time and kill 2 birds with 1 stone (because we have a shortage of rocks)

You can use the stock struts and shocks with lowering springs but to obtain the best possible ride you may want to upgrade them when you install the springs.
New Monroe struts and shocks can be had for another 200 bucks so why not do it all at once and get rid of the stock choppy ride quality.

thanks for the info guys.
right now i'm debating on getting springs (probably the s-tech's considering what suits me) and replacing the shocks and struts,

or just saving up to get coilovers.

i'm a full-time student right now so i'm not looking on spending too much.
but my 17's would look so much better with a drop.
