************NEW UPDATE**********************
Ok, so we're changing up the format a bit. My apologies, I'm noob in GH (I play some mean drums in Rockband though! :D )
Anyways, here's the deal:
We going to have two competitions: One Hard Mode, one Expert Mode.
Both competitions are Battle Mode, 1 song elimination.
Everyone is paired at random to start then we seed from there (first vs lowest, second vs second to lowest, etc)
Grand Prizes are as follows:
Hard Mode (One Winner): iPod Nano
Expert Mode: 1st place: $500 Visa gift card
2nd place: iTouch
Anyways, sorry for the confusion!
Ummm, battle mode isn't more fun... song battless can last only a few seconds. Most people that play this game a lot don't like battle mode at all! It's completely random what kind of icons you pick up and isn't really a true test of skill.
If it really is going to be 1 song battle elimination, this contest will be about 30 minutes long.
Maybe you could have a battle mode tournament (hard) and a pro face off tournament (hard early rounds, expert final rounds).

Well, this is the first of what will be several throughout the year. For now, we're going to try this format, but like anything else, this can be changed.
I like your idea of tournament face off, and I will try and incorporate that into the next competition.
For now, this is what we are going to roll with as it's already been planned and set.
On the bright side: if it's going to be 30min long, that's like getting paid $1000/hr if you show and win. :D

Hey that's cool, I'm going either way, since it's for a good cause, but some more feedback - when you do battle mode, there's no scoring in the game, so you won't be able to seed the players in subsequent rounds. It's either you win or you lose.
Edit: I think they do give you % notes hit at the end of the battle, so I guess you can use that number...

good job with running the tournament and a great decision to switch it to pro face off. Lots of giveaways and kudos for having pizza and soda for everyone! I had a blast. I would have stuck around longer and maybe have gone bowling but my wife was home sick.
Peace!

Thanks to everyone who came out! It was a great time! Let us know if there's anything we could improve for next time. We plan on throwing plenty more of these events in the future.
was there a decent mix in skill level though or were most of the people pretty good? that is what i would be worried about having a contest in the area here. 300K on expert is really tough esp on that song. what were the people scoring on hard?
