"""""County to crack down on loud exhaust systems

Dual exhaust systems may enhance your vehicle’s performance, but if the extra horsepower adds an aggressive roar, prepare to be pulled over.

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday it is cracking down on drivers who violate the state law regarding vehicles with excessive noise and modified exhaust systems.
“I think that a lot of people don’t realize that there is a law that regulates … the noise emitted by vehicles,” Sheriff Neil Williamson said, noting the restriction includes any car, truck or motorcycle.

“I get complaints all the time (about vehicle noise) when I’m out in public.”

According to section 5/12.602 of the Illinois Vehicle Code, every operating vehicle should be equipped with an adequate muffler or exhaust system, which should be properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise. It is illegal to modify the exhaust system of a vehicle in a way that will amplify or increase a vehicle’s noise above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle.

Williamson said he’s instructed deputies to be more conscious in enforcing the noise regulation and making motorists aware if they are in violation.

Motorists pulled over for the offense will either be issued a written warning or cited with a fine of $75.

“It’s especially bad for a lot of people that live at intersections or corners where the vehicles are coming to a stop and then they take off and rev them up … You can hear some of the these cars for five or six blocks,” Williamson said.

“It’s something, I think, over the last five or 10 years, it hasn’t been a real high priority with a lot of law enforcement agencies. It’s one of those things that’s crept in gradually, and it’s gotten to the point that it’s almost like noise pollution.” """"

That's why I'm glad that I have that little letter from TRD in my glove box. 50 states legal!

i didnt think that changing your exhaust was illegal if it was any louder then stock...
i though that it just had to be kept under a certan dB with the microphone having to be held a certain distance away from the exhaust.

guess ill have to do a little research and print it out to keep in my glove box in case i get pulled over.

had the same thing for my tailights but got a print out and kept that handy too...

Unless your exhaust is just annoyingly loud, or the cop is just REALLY bored; I don't think you'll have a problem with this law.

However, it does just go to show what a nanny state we live in.

oh ok. i know so far i haven't been where i live and before i moved here everyone was telling me how strict they are on it, then again i don't drive like a dumb@$$ or anything like that. i just think its dumb since they dont enforce unless its a tuner or import.....no redneck trucks, harleys (which are way worse) or crotchrockets.
oh well not like they have anything better to do w/ all the robbery's, shootings, stabbings, and drug problems lately in springfield lol

db's have nothing to do w/ it. replacing ur exhaust w/ an aftermarket one that is not meant to be like the one that comes stock is all they need to give u a ticket.
just dont drive like a moron, and ur ok, or dont get an exhaust like fray
i remember when i had my exhaust that was as loud as his.
" i didnt want to pull u over but the lady i was talking to asked me y i wasnt going to do anything about it" - cop

"ok" - me
verbal warning.
also helps to be nice and not act like ur rigth, when u know ur wrong. i was 6 blocks away when he got the complaint

haha i got my first written warning this weekend by a ISP for exhaust, cop could've sworn i had side tinted windows, after he finally realized that i hadn't touched them he wrote me a warning for "modified" exhaust. and then told me he never pulls over for it or gives tickets, haha. well i guess he pulled an oxy-moron there.

Yea...I got my first "loud" exhaust ticket last month...and when i got home I looked up the IL law for noise....it states: "Any modified exhaust that is louder than STOCK is illegal" so....if you have a TRD exhaust and it looks stock..ull be fine...but if ur like me and have a HKS big can exhaust that obviously looks non-stock...you better bend over and take that 75 dollar ticket...

The law is soooo vague that you will not be able to fight it in court. There is absolutely no dB that exhaust has to be under here in IL. Just "if its louder than stock" bs!!

^^ haha they are starting to tow here for stereo violations, if you have your stereo heard 75+ ft away you get a 250 fine for the owner of the car and 250 for the operator aka if its you you get 500$ fine and your car impounded... anyon else think that's rediculous amount for fine and the towing? (hell might as well get a speeding ticket as it would be cheaper)

then again i guess our cops have nothing better to do to hit their quota since we've had 2 homicides in the last 6 days and a kidnapping. hmmmm
