Default Toyota's "fun ideas" are reserved for Scion

But it seems that Toyota's fun ideas -- the ones that could lend some character to the moribund Corolla, things like edgy sheet metal and interior mood lighting -- are reserved for sister brand Scion.

x2 I would much rather the tC be RWD, and have a sport model or something that was turbo lol

guess these are just pipe dreams.

Um all i can say is the guy who wrote this is stupid in my opinion. Its a Corolla. Why would you expect marvels out of it. Its ment to be a daily driven, comfortable, sedan for a small family or just a nice little car. Its not ment to be a sporty vehicle. So its not redone to one persons standards but apparently 300,000 plus people like it and just need a nice, reliable and comfortable commuter car. I mean yea toyota does need to spice things up a lil (Supra hint hint) but i dont think thats happening soon. I just dont think your gonna ever see a marvel of a sports car badged as a corolla. I mean the new Camry is pretty spiced up in my book and looks damn nice with the lip kit and its pretty quick too. But a Corolla thats laughable!! Well Im dont ranting for now.

If they saved the "fun" ideas for Scion, why wasn't the FJ made a Scion? They need to refresh the tC, it's becoming long in the tooth (starting to evoke the same feeling that the outgoing Celica did).

Here here, bring back the Supra successor. Toyota should regain some attention away from the other automaker's classic remakes (Miata, Camaro, Mustang, Charger, GT-R (skyline) etc.).

Did they sign some "no-fun design" agreement after licensing engines to Lotus for their Elise or something?

I don't get the FJ cruiser... in photos it looks like it's the size of a Jeep Wrangler, but in person, it looks like a rounded off Hummer. I don't see how that monstrosity could fit into the Scion lineup. What happened to fuel efficient cars?

^^^ your exactly right. Scion is about building affordable cars. By affordable that means making a car that is FWD and not turboed. It simply amazes me how many people who already have a Scion are on here screaming about builging a RWD tC or a turboed coupe. By doing that they ( Scion ) has now priced themselves out of their market. 2 things ...

1) Toyots should be stepping up and building a fun to drive AWD or RWD car; Supra like, starting somewhere in the mid 20s

2) There are several options offered through aftermarket suppliers with turboes and super chargers and other go fast goodies. It has been done on every car Scion makes, you just have to dig into your pockets and make you Scion faster.

How then, do you rationalize Toyota's decision to build the Yaris (the echo replacement)? Some can argue that it cannibalized sales in Scion.

Europe got the 4 door hatch and we got the 2 door hatch and the sedan.

So, Scion should then take over and resurrect a version of the MR2 spyder (tC convertible?).

I think Scion's definition of "fun" changed between the first 3 car models, and the most recent two...

#1 the Yaris is about the ONLY world car toyota sells so it is SOO cheap for toyota Because
the whole world buy the same car
#2 the US only gets the 3 dr hatch / 4 dr sedan to protect SCION sales (canada / mexico) + every where else gets the 5 dr hatch
http://www.toyota.ca/cgi-bin/WebObje...24000e%2ehtml#
http://www.toyota.com.mx/modelos_spe...ior_yaris.aspx
canada has stricter safety / emissions than the us so the 5 door could without ANY cost
be brought to the US ( you can privately bring one down from canada)
#3 back to the article, the author has a point that the corolla is too safe
but toyota have more daring cars in the same market (xd /xb /matrix)
where as honda only has the Civic

i cant, i dont work for Toyota or Scion. But i can tell you that i also told Jack that while we had our sit down. I think my exact words were .. " Toyota really messed up when they decided to release the Yaris. Scion should have released the Yaris instead of the xD. And the price is right where you wanted it to be anyway."

The response i got was that Jack just recently took over Scion, so he really cant be held accountable for what Scion has done in the past. He and his team is more concerned with bringing Scion back to its roots. Making fun and afordable cars.

Sorry, with the genesis coupe rumored to be coming in at 3300-3400lbs, no thanks. I'd sacrifice RWD for something turbo'd and light, such as the MCS, or the new Abarth 500 SS. The thing I hate about my tC is that it's a "sporting" car built on a mid-size platform, and that's exactly what the genesis coupe is. Instead I'm looking to downsize for my next vehicle.

now the rumored Toyota/Subaru coupe, with the turbo 4 and RWD could be just the ticket if they keep the weight down. HEAR THAT TOYOTA?? Turbo, RWD, 2+2, sub-2800lbs and I'd be happy. don't care if you call it Scion, Toyota, Lexus, or make up a new name, just GIMME!

Fun ideas eh? Well listen up Toyota/Scion execs, a RWD tC would be extremely FUN! How's that for shaking up the car industry and not just being the #1 vanilla-car *(see Corolla/Camary) car manufacturer.
