The sad thing about that is that most people who are not qualified, know how to BS their way through an interview and get the job. Hopefully you will be able to find something. Good Luck!

I agree with both of you. It really does suck though, I hoping i can at least get a couple interveiws soon, all I'v done so far is drop off resumes and follow up with the companies I'd really like to work for. I am actually waitng to here back from Agency Power as of now, (i live 5 mins away!). That would be a company I'd love to work for.

Letda13,

put a portfolio together and quit being so down on yourself. Show before and after pics of the work you've done. Make sure to leave copies stapled to job aps to the places you want to work.

Clean yourself up and go for it. Don't smoke and make sure you eat something before taling to anybody don't take offence to this . . . you may not have bad breath.

ANYWAY, without a degree, your portfolio is what you need to fall back on to make it.

make sure to add dates to for each job and references for anybody to call to verify how satisfied they are.

get with it man!!

A lot of it has to do with the piece of paper you either do or do not have. The job market for men has dropped something like 40% in the last 6 years, which is nuts.

It is going to be doing a 180 flop from the old days, the women are going to be out working and the men at home. Which you see more now anyways, but I think it will become even more common.

I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. I have my dream career, but again a lot of hard work just finally paid off. I am sure it will for you too.

try going to school for what you are looking for.. go get certified. people like to have their cars worked on by people who are certified.. and employers look for this..

im in a similar situation, id like to have a job with computers.. im great with them, i can build them, and have no problem working on them.. but since i have no degree.. no one is intrested..

(instead im stuck at this crappy job, where i sell the aftermarket parts)

^^ Unfortunately that is true. And there are as many certified morons as there are good techs, but that paper means a lot when you first get a job. My dad has been a mechanic for over 40 years, has built all sorts of things and can fix the issues none of the dealerships in his area can fix. Yet if he wanted a dealership job (not that he would dream of stopping working for himself, but hypothetically) he would have a hard time because he is not ASE Certified, which is funny since the worst mechanics I have seen many times have that patch on their sleeve.

Same for me. When I finished college, I had a masters degree, one B in 6 years of college and some great internships. That got me in the door for a lot of good opportunities, one of which I took. Today, that piece of paper and all of those good grades mean squat... 5 years after I graduated It is my experience that people look at now, but that piece of paper got me in the door on my first one.

yeah the job market is horrible right now. employment is difficult as i am tryin to find a job too. people who know their ____ never get the job, it's always the good BSers that get it. what a shame.

The average amount of time an HR manager spends reviewing a resume is 15 seconds. That is the first impression you make with an employer so make sure you stand out. And not to mention the job market is horrible these days. I get twice as many more resumes now from unemployed applicants than I did just a couple years ago. Be hopeful and something will work out for you.

Do you have to be certified in dealing with aftermarket installs?

Good luck to you, Sir.
