Default Death to the Hummer.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/...n4151677.shtml

"On Tuesday, General Motors announced it may be ridding itself of the Hummer.

GM purchased the brand nine years ago, when its sales were booming -- driving the gas-guzzler was seen as a status booster.

It even drove into pop culture in such movies as "Night at the Museum" and "Talladega Nights." .....

....So, GM is closing four assembly plants -- cutting production of Chevy Silverado and Suburban. Some 2,900 workers are losing their jobs in Janesville, Wis. GM worker Eric Halverson says, "They don't realize how much gm means to this town. It's gonna hurt"

There are three other plants that build gas guzzlers that are on the chopping block, one in Canada, one in Mexico, and one in Moraine, Ohio -- a total of ten thousand jobs.

GM will change its focus to smaller, more fuel-efficient cars. It's starting production of a new plug-in hybrid called the Volt. "

the hummer was a horrible car for city driving in the first place. Blame pop culture and people with too much money as the cause of its rise. It seriously had no place on the road, people just bought them because they could and the whole idea of bigger vehicles symbolizes ones ego or compensation thereof.

imagine not only is the hummer now discontinued but all those people that bought it a few years ago and still making payments on the car they can't afford to use. Sales will plummet along with the hummers resale value along with a crap load of people trading it in for more fuel efficient vehicles.

It does suck that people are losing their jobs, but I hope new ones will open up when they focus on smaller fuel efficient vehicles.

The International CXT. When you absolutely, positively, must prove to the world you're not a homosexual. No really, I'm not! Look at my truck!

It's starting production of a new plug-in hybrid called the Volt.

umm i am willing to bet GM is going to build the one car the pulled from ever being built. ever see the documenty of "who killed the electric car" if not find it and watch it. interesting doc on this subject

short part of the movie

Gm in the 80's had a fully working electric car and was out on the roads in los angeles. they also bought a company who improved battery technology and then killed that company all together. gm crushed all the electric cars and didn't even look back on it at all.
So yes i beleive GM is going to dust of the appoved Designs for the electric car and actually produce them.

I'd laugh at him... for getting single-digit mileage.

Actually, it was in the late nineties because of a (later repealed) CARB mandate that the automakers make at least 2 % of its cars zero-emission vehicles. That car got maybe 55 to 75 miles per charge in warm weather. It would have been worse in colder areas, this is why it was primarily sold in California. It lost them a ton of money and would likely have never been profitable. A car like that would work with todays technology (like the Tesla Roadster), but a plug-in hybrid works better for more people (like a Chevy Volt).

Hummer isn't going away right away just yet. They can always make smaller vehicles, or car-based crossovers. Jeep is doing just that with the Compass and Patriot. Also, they could always make a diesel Hummer to increase its mileage.

I feel bad for the people losing their jobs, however I'm glad they are going to stop producing those monstrosities.

Good. Hummer is a joke anyway, nothing but Chevy Trailblazers with fender flares.

Also, if they wanted to show that they're committed to building more fuel efficient vehicles, they would stop production all together on all SUVs.
