OK, I installed Monroe 5601 shocks to smooth the ride this past weekend. Everything was pretty easy as I followed the DIY guide from clubxb. Except I used the round rubber bushings/stops and concave metal washers (instead of the flat washers) that came with the Monroe shocks instead of the old OEM rubber bushings.

Now, every time I go over rough roads, I hear "loose coins"like noise from the rear.
I can't figure out which part I installed wrong. Please help.

Also, the DIY guide is for Monroe 5870s, according to the pics from the DIY 5870 doesn't have upper protective boots, but from the diagram by Tomas, the 5870 does have own steel upper boots like the 5601s I installed. Could this be the reason I am having noise issue?

Thanks, I fixed the "loose coin" noise problem, by installing the OEM rubber bushing and tightening it all the way.

But, one of the shocks is making a squeaking noise on rough surfaces. I think it's defective.

 

Did you center the shocks in the upper hole before tightening them? On mine I first snug the bushing down slightly then move it around in the hole and let it find center. Then go ahead and compress the bushing.
Did it squeak all the time or just after changing the bushings around?

 

I used the original rubber bushing which has metal that fits into the cente hole, that it's definitely centered. The noise comes and goes now. I can't pin point a situation where it will squeak, but on some big bumps on the road, it will squeak.

I will change one of the shock back to OEM and figure out which one is squeak.

 

Oh OK the sound is prolly coming the the conection point. I would tighten up that bolt so it's a solid connection.
