Toyota says it sold 4.8 million vehicles worldwide in the first half of the year, up 2 percent from the same period a year ago.
Toyota's global vehicle sales have been about the same recently as those of U.S. automaker General Motors Corp., the world's top automaker.
Toyota Motor Corp. spokesman Hideaki Homma gave the results for the first six months of 2008 on Wednesday.

DETROIT (AP) — Toyota beat General Motors in worldwide sales in the first half of the year.
Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it sold 4.8 million vehicles between January and June, up 2 percent from the same period a year ago. General Motors Corp. says it sold 4.5 million vehicles in the same period, or about 300,000 less than Toyota.
GM says its total sales fell 3 percent in the first half of the year due to economic pressures and labor disruptions in the U.S. market. But the automaker says it posted record-breaking sales in other regions, including Latin America, Asia and Europe.
GM narrowly beat Toyota in total sales last year to retain the title of the world's largest automaker by sales.

I think it would have been closer to 5 million if they had NOT redesigned the xB and the xA. Best equiped and MPG after the Prius for under $15,000.
OR
If they got off their asses and made the Fuse and the xP pick-up.
My 2.8 cents

I'm always getting stopped by people in parking lots wanting to check out my old xB.
So much so I've print outs of specs for people to take with them.
I've also got print outs for the new xB, and about 90% of the people that stop and asked about the old xB don't like the new one.
The second gen xB should have been called the T2B and should have just kept the xB the way it was.
Also the 2nd gen xB isn't very impressive with 22 MPG city. I don't drive on the highway much.
Seems like a PT cuiser and a HHR had a baby.
If they still sold the old xAs and xBs they would be kicking honda's fit ___ all over the place. More options on a xA or xB and for $2000 less than a Fit.

I'll edit the subject to show 4.8 million.
