Rear Hatch Handle Broke
A few weeks ago chicago got some real cold weather I'm talking about -20 wind chill cold. I went to open the hatch and the whole hadle broke and cracked the body panel that holds the rear scion logo. I mean the thing just cracked and is hanging there. Well today I took it to the dealer and as I pull up the guy at the shop says "not another one" I asked what's that suppose to mean. He said they had one they just fixed with the same problem. Well he said its not cover under warrenty and its 200.00 just for the piece. I was like well if you just fixed one that had the same problem don't you think there is a defect? He said no since its cosmetic nothing he can do.
Anyone else have this problem I plan on calling Toyota to fight this. Thanks.

common problem for those that manhandle the handle.
you can search the forums.. plenty of threads about people with the problem.
if you want to attempt to repair it yourself, get some epoxy.

If this thing is breaking for a lot of people then why has it not been fixed under warrenty. Seems to me that this is a defect Toyota is advoiding. I dont manhandle the car at all so that was not the problem. If everytime it gets cold this thing is going to break then there is a problem.
Mine broke too, thats cause the struts to open the hatch slowly wear off and every tiem u have to apply more force to open the hatch...they were poorly designed and are not durable...definitely fight toyota about it
It happened to me, theres no real way you can mishandle or "manhadle" this piece of our car. No one intends to use excessive force to openour trunks, its simple, press the button and pull up. You dont even think about it, and for it to just snap shoudnt be our fault and have to pay $200 for a little defective piece. Good thing I fixed mine with double sided tape, and I can just press the button and lift up using the pedestal spoiler.
Glad I don't have to worry about that. Oh well, even if it does happen, I have more that one at my house....and I'm not talking about the stock one. I found a company that molded a garnish for me for close to $1000. Now all I have to do is primer, paint, and clear coat them. Expensive to get the mold done.....but well worth it!
Try ebay ive seen some carbon fiber ones and stock ones for a lil bit cheaper. i work for scion and they break all the time its a ____ty design and should be recalled but theres not much someone can do there just going to keep breaking. good luck tho
I was reading this forum, because I have the same problem. It's funny to see the responses of how some users think that they know the answer to your question. Like I said I have the same issue with my wife's car. The problem wasn't her pulling up on it to hard. The problem was when you live in colder areas sometimes you rubber seals freeze to the car when they are moist. Secondly plastic is more brittle in the cold, and thirdly in her case the button is defective. The rubber coating that covers the button breaks down and becomes a black gooey substance. Which in turn keeps the hatch button activated and won't let you work it properly. If you use you hatch button and you have a sticky black substance on you fingers afterwards you are in the same boat. Toyota should recall all the pieces of junk!. I would never buy another Scion in my life! Everything about them is junk!!!!!!
