do you really need to put this type of oil in the new xb's and xd's or can you get away with something cheaper? thanks.

 

I use 0w-20 just because I prefer to, but you can use non-synthetic too. Whatever it says in the manual or oil cap is fine. I can't remember if that is 5w-20 or 5w-30.

I personally prefer the green top 0w-20 Mobil1 in my Hyundai Sonata 2.4L, and will be using the same in my xB once I get past the two free oil changes.

 

Amen Elway!! I always run Mobil 1 synthetic 0-w20 every 3000 to 4000 miles. 5000 when im super busy and driving alot in few months time...

 

You are wasting perfectly good oil if you are dumping it that soon. M1 can go 7500k to 10k before an oil change (up to 15k if it's the M1 extended performance).

 

Agreed, you can do a oil analysis with total base number (how much life it has left) for about $30 (check out bobistheoilguy).

Im running the Mobil1 6000 miles in Sonata, but only because I just think you start hitting the limit on oil filtering at 6-7k.

I tested some Pennzoil Platinum at 5800 miles, and the TBN was still very high. Easily a 7500k mile oil.

 

ive been using royal purple synthetic oil since 12k. i have 33k now and have had no issues. i change the oil every 8k as well.

 

The viscosity and weight don't really have too much to do with the price... your variance there is based on what brand you're buying. But you should be putting in what you manual recommends, no matter the price.

0w-30 is fine. Im really surprised the 0w-20 green top is not there.

 

I use the Amsoil 0-20
It says its good for 25,000 miles with their filter. I leave it in for roughly 12,000-13,000 miles and when I drain it, it still has a semi see through appearance.

I have had my xb for a year and 10 months and have 46,000 miles on it. It also does not use a drop of oil before I change it.....

the wal-mart near me is selling 5qt jugs of castrol gtx 5w-20 for 12.00.

 

i run mobile 1 5/30 full syn with 1 bottle of lucas, and it runs great and the oil is amazing looking when its drained.. i change every 6-7k... i cant say enough about lucas, from the moment i added it the engine was more quiet and just smoother all around, plus its a great lub and it coats and stays on the internals

 

Why do you run 5w30 mobil when they have a 0w/20 version???

exactly.. there also the ones who put electric tape around the doors, and who installed 1 crappy back up lite .... if i used 5/30 in my 1st gen and worked great for almost 3 years now ive been running 5/30 in my 2gen for almost 2 years, im sure i will be ok... so if it locks up 1 day, then i will post on here.. maybe i shoulda used 0/20 but until that happens i will stick to my mobil 1/lucas setup

 

I use 50/75 gear oil. That stuff keeps my engine squeeky clean!
