It's not the chrome plating itself that weighs you down, but typically chrome plated wheels tend to be very heavy due to their construction and spoke pattern. They are more for bling than performance.

Only if you get a "fat" chrome wheel. Most wheels, even the so-called "racing" brands, offer their designs in chrome. And even if they don't, you can have ANY wheel chrome plated.

I have Motegi Racing MR3s in chrome, it only added like 1-2 pounds to the wheel, which was already classified as "lightweight".

watch the offset when going with 215\45\17's. could run into inner fender wall rubbing. Bill

You will want a "lightweight" chrome rim, so check out the Kazera rims at www.tirerack.com. My 17"s weigh in at just under 20 lbs each. Many 17" chromes weigh as much as 25-26 lbs. Check out the weight before purchasing. I'm running a 215-40 tire with no rubbing whatsoever and they are the same diameter as the stock rubber.

One pound of unsprung weight is equal to 8 lbs of sprung weight. Five pounds per wheel would be the same as adding 160 POUNDS to your box!!!! Think about it.

Please explain this. How is the mass of the wheel multiplied?

Amazing what 10 seconds on google can do.

p.s. Though I'm unsure of the math behind it, there are MANY factors that affect overall performance, weight is one of them.

FYI, as an example, on a 17 X 7" wheel, "Chrome Plating" will add approximately 2.0 pounds to the weight of the wheel if compared to the same wheel with a painted finish!

I say B.S.!!!!! Where did you get these numbers?!?! I work as an inspector in a sheet metal and machine shop. I deal with all types of plating (chrome, zinc, anodized, etc...). I'd like to know who started this ridiculus notion that plating adds "pounds" to its parent part! Plating does not add significant wieght to anything, only significant style points! Go with chrome!!! Later! :D
