Default Tire damage! (56k warn)

I'M ____ED! Rather than spend $100 and have a professional shop mount my new tires on my new rims, I figured I'd let the guys at the Coast Guard base do it for only $15. Money goes to morale, so it's a good cause, right?

Shouldn't have done that.

Turns out a special tool is needed to mount low profile tires, a tool that was not being used when my buddy tried to mount the first tire on the first rim. Well, here are the results:

The good news is that my buddy offered to pay to replace both the rim and the tire. I said forget about it on the rim; even though I am super ____ed, it's just cosmetic damage and it's not a problem. As for the tire, on the other hand, that cost $150, and if it can't be safely or effectively mounted, well, I'll need a new one, won't I?

The bad news is that there is nobody in the town that I live in who can mount the tire correctly. I have to drive them to Anchorage and have a shop there do it this weekend. That means another week with dry roads on snow tires -- and now possibly a 300-mile trip to go with it!

[/rant]

Any advice on whether or not I should use that tire?

DON'T use that tire.

The bead is shot, and will not seal well. There may also be other damage that is not visible.

What do the local tire places say about using that tire? No?

Sad to see the damage to tire and wheel. I didn't realize special tools/techniques were needed for 'low profile' tires, either.

Who the heck wanted to charge you $100 to mount some tires on the rims?!

Yes, it was about 65 when I took the pictures. Now my girlfriend is all uppity about me posting her feet on the internet. You'd think this was a fetish **** site the way she's carrying on.

And yes, the charge for the only local guy who mounts tires on wheels and put them on your vehicle is just under $100. Alaska is great, isn't it?

And I just ordered another tire from the Tire Rack. Cost: $165.18. What's the moral of this story?

Believe it or not, it gets pretty warm in May. I remember my first time to Alaska... I was a crew chief assistant on a KC-135. Right before we landed at Eielson AFB, everyone on board started putting on all our cold weather gear, we all looked like Eskimos. After we landed, we had to wait for US customs officers to come to the jet before we could open any doors or windows (We came from Japan). Well, I watch this car pull up and the officer gets out wearing khaki shorts and a short sleeve Polo shirt. WTF?!? We opened the door and the blast of warm air rushing in surprised the hell out of us. Another wierd thing was, we landed and outside it looked to be 5pm-ish, sun was almost down. When I asked the officer what time it was, he said it's almost midnight!! WTF! :D
