can someone explain the major differences between Helical and Mechanical limited slip differentials? both applications are available for the 1NZ-FE.
(yes, i already know that the addition of a LSD would only be beneficial with F/I)

The helical-type limited slip provides better durability and performance when it's needed most: while turning. Unlike an open differential, which shifts power to the wheel with less grip, the helical LSD constantly shifts the bias toward the wheel that has more traction.

Under straight-line acceleration, power remains evenly split between the front wheels. While cornering (e.g. accelerating out of a turn), the helical LSD directs power away from the inside wheel and toward the outside wheel, allowing the driver to begin accelerating earlier and exit the turn at a higher speed, without losing traction in the process.

 

How would you...Who would you contact to have this done?
Would you let "just any ol' tranny shop" do this mod?

i bought my unit and my local tranny shop is helping with the R&R.
i don't trust myself inside the tranny.

any almost any tranny shop can handle this.

 

Helical is better,especially for drag racing. Even a naturally aspirated car will benefit (maybe something more powerful than a xB though hahaha)

 

what makes the helical better than mechanical ?

 

are these available for the tC or only the xA and xB?

400 to remove and install the tranny
600 to do the R&R of the tranny

of course if you can do any of the work...yada, yada, yada....

 

correction... Any car that has an lsd can benifit from it ...

Helical is a gear type which requires less maintenance and over all is great for the street and some road racing events... These units has to be ordered the with the locking properties you want and they can not be adjusted... Some Helical/Gear type units cannot be rebuilt once they're worn out ...Helical lsd are Eaton, Quaife, TRD, Cusco, and some stock units...

Mechincal or clutch type is an lsd that uses cluctches to force the differential to fully lock... Requires more maintenance because you have to change the differential oil constantly ( 5000 to 10,000 miles) to keep unit well lubed and working properly... You can adjust this units locking properties ... Any where from 1 way to 2way ... And these unit are totally rebuildable. YOU have to break these units in right after install then change the oil..Mechaincal/Clutch types lsd are KAAZ, Cusco, and TRD Mechincal...

1way = locked only on acceleration
1.5way = locked only on acceleration and semi locked on deceleration
2way= full lock acceleration and deceleration

1 way = good for FWD and good for the street
1.5way = good for FWD, AWD and MR's
2way = RWD

You'll here them give out a clicking sound... When they dont that means they're not working or are losing grip... Thats why I guess I preffer Clutch type lsd because you have that clicking noise vs the gear type...
