Hood Scoop on an XB anyone?
I'm kind of an older guy who grew up driving 1970/1971 Dodge Challengers and Plymouth Cudas. I was in HS in the 80's and when I was a teenager, late 60's & 70's muscle cars were the thing to have...course gas was quite a bit cheaper back then too...though i don't recall ever paying less than 99 cents per gallon.
Anyway I have been looking for a 4 door vehicle that gets good gas mileage and can comfortably carry 4 people inside it. So, I see this car/van/wagon thing that looks like a box on wheels.....I am thinking who the hell would buy such a thing... Then I start looking at them more and start thinking they are actually kind of cool. Today, I finally went out and test drove one! I only got to drive a manual trans, as the dealer had no automatics available to test drive. It seemed to me to accelerate a little faster than my 2000 Civic Dx coupe with auto trans. The manual XB, in 5th gear, turned 3500RPMs at 75MPH and 4000RPMs at 80MPH. 3500RPMs, was smooth, but at 4000RPMs i felt a harmonic vibration coming from the engine, which seems to dissipate some after you passed the 4000 mark. I usually cruise at 80MPH on my way to work (on the freeway), so i was not particularly thrilled at this.
And this leads me to the title of my post. The stock XB looks too plain and toyish to me, so if i get one, i'd have to liven it up some. I found a pic of a car online with a JP bodykit that i liked. So I worked on it from there. I added some Weld Wheels and a hood scoop that is reminiscent of the scoop on a 1969 440 Six Pack Road Runner. I would make the scoop functional to feed an aftermarket CAI, like the Injen or the Dragon-R. Was curious as to what you younger guys had to say about my perspective future XB... I also heard the XB Magnaflow muffler sound clip off Magnaflows website, and my heart sank
.....I started to reconsider the whole project, then I heard the sound clip of Strups XB exhaust system and I think I could live with that, sounds much less like a toy
.
Here is my concept XB:

i like the idea, but as far as THAT scoop goes, i dunno. i know its just an idea, but, maybe place it right over the filter, because if you did a center one you would have to channel it like a Good Hood, and boxing off the intake filter, making it that much more difficult, but effective. If you place it on the right side of the hood, and make it a small one, it would be more functional than just a center scoop, in terms of introducing colder outer air to the filter. But, i think it would be a hand off, looks for functionality, but i couldnt tell you how much better a scoop would do for our cars. ie, subarus have top mount intercoolers, so they need the scoop. older cars had carbs. the xB, i dunno about it. Maybe a shaker hood. . . . that would be. . different. (chillout guys, its a joke)
I like that alot.. I know someone who just did a similar top grill, it looks fricken sweet. the hood scoop is a great addition in my opinion.. the body kit is unique... but i also think it is too "unique" but thats a hot Idea.. Wish I could afford to do half that work to my tC! I'm still panhandleing for rims.
im in the same thing as for hoods right now in which style to go with. my advice to you would be do your hood for cosmetic, and forget performance. if you want to do some ram air stuff, do it with the fog like covers. it would be much more effective and easier to work. i do think you're on the right track though.
the strup exhaust does sound good, but IMO, the magnaflow sounds just as good in person. in the video i thought it was crap too. it sounds fine. best of luck on your decision!

I know what you mean, as one of the old people here, I too love the Mopar muscle cars and was trying to think of something myself that would look tasteful. My husband and I had a 69' Charger R/T 440 we had to part with years ago and I regret it now.
The photo has a WRX type scoop. Looks interesting. Good luck with your scoop endeavors.

I want a hood scoop real bad, but really, I don't see any practical functionality in an NA xB. But I'd still like one.
As for the sound, you should try getting an intake and header first before getting an exhaust. It sounds like your concerned with overall noise, but still want a nice sporty/gutteral sound. I found that the header and intake was perfect for me for the same reason. I didn't want some buzzy exhaust, but I wanted a nice deep sporty that didn't get irritating. Plus the added umph helps.

Someone beat you to it.
I just saw this, thought I might pass is on...

Lund makes stick on wrx type scoops in CF or black. That one above is too big!! Lets face it most scoops are non-functional including many from the muscle car days.
Maybe someone should get a snorkel for a XB.

that's not a bad looking concept you have going there. but i have to agree with the others that the STI scoop is too big, scale it down a bit and it should look better balanced. also, keep in mind that in your pic, you are using a gen1 bb as the base so the lower two grills won't look like that unless you do some work (the grill by the foglights in particular).
i too was looking into adding a hood scoop but after looking at all the different options, i just couldn't find one that would match the rest of the parts i wanted to get for my car without making it look too 'busy' / unbalanced. Still, maybe you'll find something you like so try here..

if you just want to change up the profile of the car, maybe you could go with a cowl.. err, i think that's what they are called. basically a hood scoop facing backwards? err, i think that's what they are called.. *shrug*

DO IT! It looks great just the way you designed it. I especially like the grills over the headlights. Very original. I would take off the original hood, buy one from the junk yard, put the scoop on the spare and paint to match. That way if you ever want to go back, you have the orig hanging in your garage.
if u realy want a hood scoop i think your best bet is something like this

Thanks for all the responses! There were more of them than I thought there would be.
I see a lot of people recognized the scoop and they are correct, it is from a Subaru Impreza WRX STI. I literally took it off a photo of an STI and photoshopped it in place on the XB. I doubt that the scoop photo and the XB photo are in perfect scale to each other, so the scoop might actually appear slightly bigger than it really would on the XB.
As far as it being too big, like many people were saying.....I have seen the scoop in person and measured it, along with the XBs hood, and it really isn't that BIG in my opinion. The scoop is 25" wide, 12.5" deep and only 2.5" tall. The XB's hood is 55" wide and 24" deep. I figure if I am going to put a scoop on the hood, I'd rather not have a tiny little scoop opening, rather have something more capable of swallowing up small animals and children haha.
The bad part is, I contacted my local Subaru dealer and discovered the STI scoop is available as a seperate item, but at a price of $209.56... Not sure I want to spend that much on just a scoop when I'd have to mount it on a hood (most likely buy a 2nd hood to mount it on) and paint it etc. Course that front grill in the photo costs about $180 just by itself... This customizing stuff can rack up the $$$ fast lol.
I saw the guy's post showing a carbon fiber hood with a fake scoop on it.....carbon fiber hoods are pretty expensive and i'm not into their look personally, but thanks for the tip.
I did find an interesting one-piece fiberglass XB hood that has a scoop moulded into it! The scoop is non functional, but they say that you can cut a hole in the base of it and make it functional if you choose to do so. The scoop on this one is more conservative looking and probably would appeal more to the people that thought mine was to BIG. The price on this hood is $350.

I'll probably ponder this a while longer, as I don't even have the XB yet, so I have plenty of time to think about it.
