Default First oil change?

I just bought my 2005 Polar White XB in June. I was wondering when do I do my first oil change? The dealer says at 1000 miles, but the Scion Maintainace manual says at 5000 miles. Which do I do first???

Its a matter of much debate. Some do it at 1k or less, some at three, some at five. Some say these are modern engines and don't need babying, some say they still see metal flakes in the oil. I went with 3k for the first three, then four since I have changed to synthetic.

Also, this probably belongs in Power Hungry. Perhaps you would get more info there.

like max said, its a big topic of debate. on all my new cars i always make sure to put a good amount of load on the engine, and then change the oil within the first 50 miles, then switch to mobil1 at 5k miles. i've read that the first 20 miles or so are critical when it comes to seating the pison rings properly, and during this time you are wearing down the crosshatch pattern in the cylinders, therefore you will have metal in your oil.
dunno if thats fact or fiction, but i can tell you my last two cars i did that with ran very strong and smooth even after driving 30k a year for a couple years in each.
its all a matter of what makes you feel best really. changing your oil early and/or often won't hurt anything but your pocket book.
