Default Taiya hiparu (translation; streching of the tire)

Wassup to errbody to Scionlife. I am a newbee to scion life, but know that the bB is a popluar car from Japan. I wanted to know if anybody knows a tire/rim shop around the North Couny area that could put a 18x8.5 rim on a 215/35/18 tire? Or a 205/35/18? U think it is not possible, but it is. In Japan right now, that style of putting small tires on rim is popluar in Japan. holla!

There are some tire places up here in the bay area that will do that. I love the stretched tire look!

Peace,

I have a 205 on a 8" rim. After trying for like an hour to get one of my tires on, the guy mounting them went out and borrowed a machine called a cheetah. Let me tell you that anyplace that got one of these could probably stretch a rubber-band on a 10" wide rim. A cheetah is basically a compressed tank of air that literally blows the tire on with one shot. A 205 on a 8.5" would be no problem. I got my tires mounted at Discount Tires in LA. Not sure if they got DT up where you are, but if you call ahead I bet most tire places would be able to hook it up.

Minsk is exactly right. I used to manage at a Discount and we would use a cheetah for getting tires on too wide of wheels. Pretty cool to use or see someone doing it.

Question??? I'm just wondering why you would strech it? Is there an advantage or disadvantage in doing this?

Thanks,
Hubert

yeah, it's all about looks with this mod, unless stretching it does something to the sidewalls? It may produce a stiffer ride because of less sidewall travel (does that make sense)?

New infinity G35 comes with the tires pretty streched on it. That was the first time I had seen it, Let me tell you curbs are hell when there is no rubber hanging over the side of the rim

Just to drop an opinion from Japanese guy. Those styles are changing right now, since influence from U.S. is getting strong such as what they call "supo-con" (meaning sport compact for short) I think its all about being different. I got 215/35/18 on my 18"x8 axis spider, I don't dig the streched look, and I even hate it when I gotta becareful not to get close to the curb or slowing down on crossing rail roads or bumps

but is there any safety issues with it like a coming off when cornering hard or hitting really harsh road conditions?

We are pretty much HOOKED UP with sake We carry some rare sake that's only available at our restaurant in West Coast, most of what we get goes to East Coast, mostly to NY, end up at upscale hotels & restaurants. When it comes to sake, we don't mess around! (should I be proud of that!?) Most expensive I have is like $300 bottle sake (1.8L bottle) and they only make limited number of them.

People usually have this misconception that stretched tires will roll off the bead, but on the contrary, stretching a tire gives you exceptional sidewall stiffness, and imo, it increases your threshold range. As for the whole argument about hitting curbs, I honestly NEVER plan on hitting any curbs, and with stretched tires, I'm just that much more careful. I figure if I'm bad enough to ever curb a rim, even if it had fatty, non-stretched tires, I deserve to live with the shame of curbing those wheels! >HAHA<

Hey jon... you guys deal with sake? Hmmmm, we need to work out some sort of exchange arrangement :)

They're fully mounted and inflated if that's what you mean.
