Default Rims 101...

I've done a search and haven't found what I'm looking for...

I need some schoolin' on rims/ wheels. I've got 18"x7.5" 45 offset Motegi FF7's wrapped w/ 215/35's. I'm lowered on 2" Goldlines and I've got the OTG shims. I like everything, but I don't love it... all of these VIP post are killing me.

question is this - how much offset can I get (w/ or w/o the shims) and not roll my fenders? I'm pretty flush now and I like the look.

what I want is chrome and lip. so how much offset and how wide a rim?

does a chrome mesh rim w/ nice lip count as a VIP rim?

Man, I'm feeling you....

But here are my observations and I think most of the guys (and gals) in-the-know would agree, that the fitment and the stance, and of course the rim style, is what it's all about. After looking at a lot of VIP and vip-style cars, it would seem that you really got to slam it down. It looks like lowering springs with drops of 2". or even 2 and a half won't cut it. Those like bboxd look like they they at least 3.5 inch drops, and the rears are fitted so that the tire is ultra close, but still not touching, the fender, and have the appropriate camber.

Then, it seems that most, if not all, the vip-style rims have a wider lip (polished too) than the average rim, 2.5 to 3 inches at least.

But it looks like the first thing that would need to be done, is to get dropped even more, and push the wheels out, then add the camber.

thanks, Roger. I'd like to see your ride - Buddy Clubs on Teins... sounds nice.

I agree about the drop - 2" just won't cut it. but, Stick missed the point - or perhaps I didn't ask properly - I'm not looking to go VIP. I asked about the mesh rim and then forgot about the Works, so dumb question.

I'm genuinely curious about the offsets and widths of rims. I just haven't experimented enough to know just what offset will gimme a nice stance w/o pushing the wheel out so far that I need fender flares or some such.

Regarding offsets, this is what it seems to be: for something like Eurolines, 18x8.5 +25, +20....for Equips, say 15x8 +25, +10.

I think what look really cool, and I think most will agree, is a rim, at least 8" wide with at least a 2-3" lip. proper offsets, 15" for the sporty look, 18 " for the vip"ish look. But for "VIP" you gotta slam it have the camber, etc...to get that "Stance."

There are a lot of rim choices....keep looking and get the one you really like!

BTW, mesh look really good. SignalXB has Jline gold mesh with polish lip....I think it's one of the best looking xb's out there, vip or not.

Are considering spacers? Or are you considering getting new rims? Aside from checking out other rides (in person helps more) for examples of how flush your prefer it, you can experiment with washers or something to push your wheels out to where you like it. Measure the washers and get some high quality spacers of the same size.

If you want to space out your Motegis, I'm guessing a 20-25mm spacer will do the trick depending on your idea of flush is....Don't worry, It's gonna take like 3" of spacers before you need fendef flares Any more than 20mm, you might have to roll your fenders a bit. I have to say though, that the majority of awesome offsets here on SL have required at least a fender rolling.....

thanks, Rico. but I've got spacers. I'm not looking to do anything more w/ the wheels I've got. as is, what I've got is flush enough for me. plus, I'm not looking at going any lower - my 2" Goldlines are fine.

my questions revovle around offsets and widths of rims - what's the max offset (w/o rubbing or rolling) and width I can get. I'll use the OTG shims or leave them off. I'd like to push the limits w/o all the work. basically, I want my cake and want to eat it too.

right now ive got 15 offset on a 7 inch rim in the back. i could be probably down to 5 offset and not worry about rolling. front i could do 15 offset and be fine too.

If you do not want to roll or pull fenders here are your specs

Front- 8" +30
Rear- 8" +20

These specs will work regardless of your wheel diamter. Itll work with 15's all the way to 18's. This is a pretty conservative fitment but still relatively "flush."

But in my eyes, if you are going through the hassles of ordering some wheels with custom offsets and specs and are paying top dollar for some wheels, you might as well do a little rolling to get the "correct" fitting wheels.

Rolling the inside lips of our cars can give us that extra space we need to give it that right look. Rolling fenders is not that difficult. Once you get the hang of it its not that bad. It'll take a little bit of your time but in the end you will have something that you will not regret.

Thats just me though. I would not be able to live with myself always saying, "Damn, i shoulda done this..." You know? Do it right or dont do it at all. Living with regret sucks! hehe.

bBOXD, you the man. thanks for the info.

I totally agree w/ you, but my budget - well, really my beautiful bride - won't allow too much more time or money to be spent on the "girlfriend". so, I'm left to research and figure out a way to sell what I've got to get what I want. does that make sence?

I'll get there; I'm just in the research phase now. bidding my time, picking my moment to do the mod. most of what I've done has been in the cover of darkness or in the quiet of the garage - only to be found by her later. and what does she usually say?... "wow, I really like what you did."

chrome rims w/ a fat lip - oh, yeah she'll love it. she just doesn't want to see it on the bank statement.
