Default Does Your Power Steering Unit Whine?

Ever since getting the car, I've noticed a whine that starts at about 1500 rpm, and peaks at 2800 rpm. After that it either disappears or drowned out by other noises. It sounds a little like a turbo. It has gotten louder over the first 1000 miles and now seems fairly constant. Of course, I sound-deadened my box, so maybe I am just noticing it more.

I believe this sound is coming from the power steering unit. If I rev the motor to 2800 rpm and hold it there, the sound is clear -- and if I turn the wheel at all, while I am actually turning it the sound increases significantly in volume. Sound like a problem, or is it the nature of the beast?

a friend of mine had the same thing after she got her xB repaired.
I think it was because the steering belt was loose.
