Hey everyone,
My April 2006 edition of Motor Trend just arrived. Beginning on page 110, the magazine compares the Hummer H3, Jeep Liberty Renegade, Nissan Xterra and Toyota FJ Cruiser.
The verdict overall on page 118: First place goes to Toyota's FJ Cruiser.

"Great on- and off-road, striking styling, and a base price in the basement."

1. FJ Cruiser
Great on- and off-road, striking styling, and a base price in the basement.
2. Nissan Exterra OR-V6
Quick and agile, our SUV of the Year is still running up that hill.
3. Hummer H3
Rugged looks can't save this expensive yet anemic off-roader.
4. Jeep Liberty Renegade
Too cute, too old, and not macho enough to contend in this group.

Oddly enough, Car & Driver had a similar test:
1. Nissan Exterra OR-V6
Highs: Slick shift linkage, poised atop boulders, a rabbit to 60 mph.
Lows: Mushy brakes, looks too much like its predecessor, noisy rear suspension.
The Verdict: Unfazed by anything we threw at it.
2. Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD
Highs: On pavement, it's a car.
Lows: Too little ground clearance, steep base price, dismal fuel economy.
The Verdict: Still the best all-around Jeep ever created.
3. Toyota FJ Cruiser
Highs: Look-at-me styling, vast ground clearance, washable interior
Lows: A rear seat designed for prisoners, meager visibility, calibrated for trails instead of tarmac.
The Verdict: Great value, great fun, and, hey, it's a Toyota.
4. Hummer H3
Highs: Real off-road tires, 4.0:1 low-range granny gear, a confident and competent rock hound.
Lows: About 500 pounds too heavy in its loafers, about 60 horsepower too light in its loafers.
The Verdict: Governor Arnold off-road, Barney Fife on-road.

Man I love that FJ cruiser.
In an unrelated topic, I wonder if Toyota has any plans to start adding factory iPod setups like with the Scions. I see an FJ in my future and if I could hook an iPod up in there without having to swap out stereos I'd be a happy guy.

Take a look at my introduction to the FJ at this link. Pics stop on page 3.
