Default Sunroof/ moonroof options for XB

Does Anyone know if they will offer a sunroof or moonroof option for the 2007 models? The dealer told me when i was looking at the 05 and 06 ones that sunroof or moonroof was never an option but i have seen several of them since with large moonroofs and one i saw in daytona had a folding rag top which looked nice but scared me if the person ever got into an accident since the roof supports had been removed. If factory does not offer a sunroof or moonroof has anyone gone and had it installed aftermarket? About how much did it cost to get it done? I am kind of afraid of someone chopping the xb more than it has already been and having problems with an aftermarket option later on like water leaking ect.... so maybe trade mine in later for an 07? My 05 only has 3k miles on it after all.

Default sunroof

Had a Webasto Panoramic sunroof put in my RS 2 by Florida Auto Restylers in Jacksonville. They did good work, not cheap, but they seem to have a very good rep. I was willing to pay for the rep. Scary having a large hole cut in the box, but worth it.

all of the sunroofs are an aftermarket option, webasto makes a couple of really nice ones. I think mine was 1400.

This is my first try posting a picture in a thread. Here goes

I actually had the dealership install it. (I know, I know the dealer overcharges and is the embodiment of evil, but by having them arrange it they would’ve been liable if they jacked it up. Plus it didn’t void my warranty.) They actually contracted with an outside shop to do the work. (If anyone around Los Angeles wants the shop's name I can get it.)

As you can hopefully see, the roof both opens completely and does that tilting thing. Plus it closes automatically when I turn the car off unless I hit a switch. One word of warning -- with this type of install you lose around an inch or two of headroom. Not a problem for me, but my b/f is six feet tall and says he misses the extra space when he drives my box instead of his stock one.

Like dugzillaxb said, sunroofs are not cheap, mine added nearly $2,000 to the price (again dealer arranged), but it was a deal breaker for me. (Almost didn't get a box when I saw it wasn't an option on Scion's site.) Heck, even with all my mods my box was STILL way cheaper than most new cars!

Its my understanding that the difference between a sunroof and a moon roof is like night and day...................

I could be wrong, but I think a moon roof is where you have a piece of glass in the ceiling of the car that doesn’t open. A sunroof is different because it can open and/ or be removed. I have no idea what a rag top is.

Default Ragtop

take the hole yo would have to make to put on a sunroof or moon roof, and instead of installing one of those, you put on a soft convetible type of material that you sort of roll back to open.
Ever seen a 60's and 70's VW beetle or Bus ??? Before they did glass on the roof, they did Rag tops, so all you have over you head is cloth.

Looks cool, it be sort of a throw back, like white wall tires and woody kits, I like to see a picture of that

I get it now.

Yeah, that would look nice. I don't think I could ever own one though, I would always be paranoid that someone would cut it up to break in!

moonroofs open as well. I used to have an 02 isuzu trooper gas sucker that they offered with a sunroof or moonroof. The moonroof slides back inside the ceeling where as the sunroof slides up above the ceeling and size wise the sunroof was about half the size of the moonroof and i could stand up and outside the car with my moonroof hehe.... dunno how that is very usefull but i liked it and now i want a moonroof in every car i own. I have had a rag top before and in florida they die way to fast and i do not feel like maintaining it anymore lol.

the difference between a moonroof and a sunroof is that a moonroof has a piece of glass and a sunroof is solid and looks like the rest of the roof, but opens. I had a sunroof on my celica.

Default sunroof

The price I got was for the whole job. I had no interest in risking doing this job myself and I wanted the leak warrenty FAR offered. I can't lay my hands on the receipt, but I think it was around $1700.00. This is for the larger of the two that Webesto offers. I know that this is expensive, I recall some other threads about sunroofs when I was considering mine, but not a lot of competition in this area and this company had the best reputation as far as I could discover. Everyone I talked to, including some other places that do custom work, kept refering me to them.

I have had my box for a year and a half and my sunroof looks great and works perfectly, it also looks like it came from the factory.

I'm not sure if you are referring to the headliner, but the interior on mine turned out great! Looks factory installed on the inside. Exterior looks aftermarket, but not bad, just sits a little above the roof line.

isnt the sunroof the one that opens upward then slides back while the moonroof slides back into some housing inside of the roof

I think it read it somewhere

I like the panoramic moonroofs though. I did see the regular one in person though, it looked good(albeit it was closed and I was 4 stories up at the time)

Sunroof" is the generic term used to describe an operable panel in a vehicle roof which can let in light and/or air. "Moonroof" is a term created by Ford in the 70s, yet is now used generically to describe glass panel inbuilt electric sunroofs.
Hmmm, so all moonroofs are sunroofs, yet not all sunroofs are moonroofs? We found further clarification -- "sunroof" is the term originally used to describe a metal panel that would only allow light or air in when opened. A "moonroof," on the other hand, is a glass panel that can allow light in even when it is closed (provided, of course, you slide back that nifty fabric-covered panel to expose the glass).

True sunroofs, those made just of metal, appear to have gone the way of 8-tracks in automobiles, and these days, most "sunroofs" are really "moonroofs" -- panels of tempered glass, usually tinted, that tilt up to allow a flow of air, or slide back into the roof entirely, giving the car occupants a brief but tantalizing glimpse of life in a convertible.

Yeah, I have a moonroof!
Thanks for clearing that up.

Malthorn, I can’t tell from your ‘pics, is the back half where the glass retracts to, or is the top picture only half open? Either way it looks great, but if it opens even more than shown. . . . wow.

Son_of_Microbus, would you mind posting a better ‘pic of your sunroof? It’s interesting to see how different they all are.

Looks like you both have wind vents on yours too. Did they come standard or did you buy them later? If so, any recommendations?
