In no particular order, our top gas-sipper picks:

Toyota Yaris. With an EPA estimate of 34 miles per gallon in city driving and 39 on the highway using an automatic transmission, the Yaris is also an enjoyable set of wheels to own. Like all Toyotas, it's well built, nicely finished off for the price and lots of fun to drive while doing everyday chores. A nicely equipped model can be had for about $13,325 or so.

Any Scion. This division of Toyota really took off with the younger set, but that's not to say that older drivers can't enjoy them as well. The xA model's a neat little scooter car that can return up to 38 miles per gallon and be had for as little as $12,780 or so for a base model. And don't turn up your nose at the xB or the tC, both of which are well made, economical and fun to drive with good mileage. Just watch the high prices for dealer-installed options.
