Check this thread, I think he’s showing the plate style you’re looking for:

Maybe you can ask where he got it.
Good luck!

have fun. those things are few and far to come by. you can find the back housing piece that lights the whole license plate up but finding the actual license plate is another story. usually if they're seen on auction sites they're snatched up quickly or sold for ridiculous amounts of $$$.
Yeah, those plate are dope!!! I asked the question where did you get that, no answer. I guess want to keep secret.
I asked a girl I know in Japan to get me one, she said no because its against the law. I want to get one too.

The plate in this thread https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=118219
seems real. but two things i think its fake is...
1. There should be a mark of Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport , it should be just right on the left bolt.
2. It's SUPER strict in those things in Japan. Like mat18 said its illegal of course.
unless you take that off from somebody's car lol
Other than that it seems real. there's only two Japanese characters used in illuminated license plate, which is letter RO or YA, and the licence plate in that thread is letter YA.
Oh yeah one more thing. if he really took the license plate from Japan, it's from Okinawa. The letter on the top of the license plate indicates the place, and for that letter it's Okinawa.
Oh maybe this could explain why he has one. He or his friend was in Okinawa base and that's the place he had or his friend had.

It pops up every once in a while. the seller had a front and rear set available. you just gotta use the right key words:
Japanese license plates
JDM plates, etc

This plate is the real deal, no fake stuff here!
1. There should be a mark of Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport , it should be just right on the left bolt.
That is True, its an aluminum seal and it has to have the same Kanji character on it as the license plate. But, that is only used on the rear license plate not the front.
2. It's SUPER strict in those things in japan. like mat18 said its illegal of course.
* It's illegal to take these from Japan. License plates there are controlled by the DMV and if you don't give them back you will have to pay a huge fine.
I got it from a friend in Japan. Good luck finding these in good condition with all the parts. If you find it make sure you have the right engine code or you will look stupid.
I see these for sale sometimes around $300+

Characters in gray mean the prefecture code used to be abbreviated on older plates. Before 1988, the prefecture code was usually abbreviated to the first Kanji.
There are some prefectures which begin with the same Kanji (for example Osaka and Oita), so some needed to be spelled out in full to avoid conflict. Usually the one with the largest population
would take the abbreviation and the others would be spelled out in full (Osaka is abbreviated and Oita is spelled out in full).

And make sure you got good prefecture code too. some ppl do not want to have some lame-country-side prefecture code on their license plate.
Oh yeah if you wanna go cheap, find some fake Japanese license plate
and there's like a kit to light up the license plate like that.
well if its only 300, i would just go ahead and purchase the real one tho....
I've seen some ppl attaching "New Driver" and "Silver driver" magnet thingee on their cars too.
New drivers for ppl who got drivers licence within a year and Silver driver one is for older ppl ( forgot the age range)
in japan its so embarrassing to have that mark. New drivers are dying to take that off but its ILLEGAL to take that off if you got your license within a year.
stupid Japanese law.
It's funny how Japanese ppl want to convert their bB/ist to xB/xA
and ppl in da US want to convert their xB/xA to bB/ist.
sorry way off topic

I figure if your gonna spend over $300 on a rare part to go JDM, I would hope that person would do their research and do it right.
The True JDM enthusiast would clown for the stupidity.
56 is the vehicle class # on my plate.
