Default VSC, Trac OFF, & Engine Symbol all at once - how bad is

Hi all...I'm new, and wow does there seem to be a lot of info here.

At any rate, while driving my boyfriend's 2005 xB on the highway this morning, the VSC, Trac OFF and engine symbols all came on simultaneously.

I turned right around and brought it back to him since I wasn't far from home. It appears from the owner's manual it has something to do with the traction control or suspension. I know from 3 little lights, no one can make a "diagnosis" - but what should we expect from the dealer. Are things along this line covered by warranty?

Depends on what the problem is. Is it lowered or any work done to it recently? Is the car still under warrenty? Probably a loose connection.

No, it is completely as it came from the factory. Well, other than having to get completely repainted a couple months back...we had a HUGE hail storm.

I'd imagine it's under warranty, a 2005 with ~8000 miles on it. I just worry that certain parts are not covered under warranty perhaps.

Well it sounds like the CEL (check engine light) came on, when this comes on so does the other two lights. Just take it to the dealer and let them check it out. No big deal, especially since it's under warranty with nothing done to it except some paint.

Oh, I was not aware the engine "symbol" would cause the other 2 to come on with it. Thank you for your help...I am a worry wart - such a nice little car!

Check the gas cap and make shure it is tight if it is not it will make the lights come on. I put a cold air intake on mine and the lights came on and the shop told me it was leaking around the gas cap and they put a new one on and the lights are still on. I took the xb to the body shop to get fixed and they hooked it up and it showed a bad maf sensor and that is 145.00. So check the gas cap and tighten it till it pops and see if it works first.

Okay before you go to the dealer try these two things. I have a 5-speed xb and the unit that controls traction and vsc is located under the emergency brake on that little pannel that you can pull out, if you have ipod and aux input its under that little plastic piece. Unpulg it and plug it back in. Then with out the key in the ignition push down on the trip meter, then turn your car to accessory mode, and then start it, this will reset your cel light and should clear up the problem if it is a connection problem or if you just rolled over 5,000 miles as the cel is triggered every 5k to ensure an oil change has been performed. Hope this helps.

Actually the maitnance required light come's on when it's time for th oil change, not the CEL. There is an easier way to reset the ECU, pull the fuse in the fuse box to reset it. Here's the thread.

I had it happen to me before. Gas cap was the problem. Make sure that puppy is tight and the door is closed good.

Do a search on VSC and you will see there have been a lot of threads on this. There are a number of causes including, as mentioned, the gas cap. My problem was solved when I got my alternator replaced.

Yup same thing happened to me after 5 miles of 80 mph dragging, I got a piece of slag that kicked up and shorted out a Wheel speed sensor for VSC, ABS and trac control. I changed the harness and Viola problem fixed.

Thats what happens when your battery is almost dead. When the battery is charged enough it will go away.

Good thread here, I'm having the same problem: the VSC, TRAC OFF, and CHECK lights stay on.

I will check my gas cap and keep everyone updated here. It could also be a low battery, since I was away in Japan and haven't driven the car.

I just solved my problem. The MAF sensor was loose. One of the screws to hold it was gone. I put in a different screw, reset the ECU, and all is good. I installed the AEM CAI over a year ago, and I guess the screw got loose and fell off.
