Default That unbearable pounding of my eardrums...

Anyone else notice that low-frequency pounding of your eardrums when you open the rear windows or your xB?

Is there any fix like wind deflectors that would work?

Thanks!

Yeh, that whumping. My wife's PT Cruiser does the same thing. I don't seem to get it with the front windows rolled down at the same time, however, which is how I've dealt with it...

If you break out the rear hatch glass there will be no more thumping.
Or get some window visors I have tried both options and they both work quite well.

Default Air Pressure

It's all due to the matter of the air pressure inbalance created by allowing the 50-60mph wind rush into the area behind where you're sitting and at the same time the air from around your head is trying to escape the vehicle. This creates a pressure inbalance. A person sitting in the back seat probably wouldn't hear the "whumping" noise. Just crack the front windows about 3" and it will relieve the pressure and thus no more "whumping".

I notice this in any car with the back windows rolled down but not the front.

I've driven plenty of cars and never had this problem before. In the "old days" cars had trim pieces around the windows that kind of broke up the air flow, I'm guessing.

we used to get drunk and do that on purpose in an old suburau station wagon - we called it the helicopter.

why do people do stupid stuff when they're drunk? lol.

Like they said - it's all air pressure, and just cracking another window down just an inch or two will make it go away.

I should note here that this is something that happens in the new Yaris hatch if you only open one of the front windows.

They should've made the rear windows wing vents in that one.

Default pounding eardrums

I have the same thing in my box. Not so bad if you lower front and back windows. Wifes Highlander also does it with just front windows open.

Lots of vehicles whump, some don't. One I had, that did it really badly, was my '71 Land Crusher FJ-40. I actually fixed that by accident when I installed a couple of small roof vents (intended for boats) at the rear of the roof, and there was someplace for the overpressure to escape. The roof vents were intended for ventilation while camping, but helped with the wind whump and airflow on the road.

Two of my Volvos had a full width vent under the rear window, with a hidden rubber flap that only let air *out* and kept rain and/or wash water from coming in. Those Volvos had the best ventilation of any of my 28 vehicles.
