Hub bolt safety with large spacers Q.
Hi Everybody,
I'm running the H&R 1" wheel spacers in the rear with stock wheels. I'd like to stack a 5 or 10mm OTG spacer on top of those, but I'm worried about the stress on the hub bolts. Even if I use the hub specaers instead of the wheel spacers, I still question the sheer force on all the bolts in question.
Do you think I'm nuts for worrying about this or should I pick up some higher strength steel bolts? Also, any thoughts on bearing stress in this application?
Thanks,
J-

If you really want to push your wheels out further I would not stack a spacer on top of a the H&R spacers. I assume the H&R you currently have are the bolt on type that include new mounting studs for the wheels?
For more spacing in just the rear you can add the 10mm Hub shim from OTG. Otherwise, order another set of H&R spacers in the size you want. In the front, you just need to get the right spacers.
What should you really do? Buy wheels with the proper fitment to begin with. If you did that you wouldn't have to worry about the additional stress you are putting on your suspension components and the hardware by cobbling together multiple spacer options.
As far as the sticker... Just order an "I'm an impatient j@ck@$$" sticker. That one seems appropriate.

geez, just because someone doesn't post up a reply immediately doesn't mean EVERYONE's clueless on this forum.
if you're honestly concerned about the safety & strength of the bolts then replace them. if anything it'll be piece of mind to put you at ease. good strength grade bolts are not ungodly expensive either.
i personally think they should be fine with the 10mm OTG rear hub spacer (not unless you plan on running the car hard until death). what size offset wheel are you running that you need more then 1" of spacing!?

Impatient, you bet. J@ck@ss, not so much. Namecaller, try again. Thorough, oh yeah.
I did mention the hub spacer as an option and that I'm using stock wheels.
I'm leaning towards the hub spacers because they come with bolts. I'll ask them what grade they are before I order and maybe sub them out during the instal.
I'm probably worrying about nothing cause it's just a daily driver, but better safe than sorry and piece of mind is definitely worth the effort.
Anyone else pushing these steelies way the hell out there? Maybe I should just turn them around to flip the offset. That would cure my impatience.......HA!

If all you want is pushed out steelies, quit wasting your money on spacers. Instead sell your spacers and order wheels to your spec from http://www.custombuiltsteelwheels.com
If you do a search for "widened steelies" you should pull up a couple of threads. I know CTRuss is running them, as well as someone in Hawaii. (Sorry I forgot your s/n.) The finish isn't the greatest on these, but the price is awesome. You can pay extra to have them powder coated or chromed before they ship as well. The first orders from guys on this site took a while because the company didn't have the necessary parts in stock. Just call them up for your order and tell them what you want. They should be able to tell you then if the parts are in and how long it will be before they can ship.

I suspect that the bolts for the hub spacers will be standard metric grade 8.8. It wouldn't hurt to upgrade if you can find the right stuff, nor would it be very expensive.
Hub spacers shouldn't change the bearing loading, at all, but wheel spacers and changing the wheel offset definitely will.
You may end up with problems going to different wheel offsets than stock- what fits in the back may not fit in the front, and vice-versa.

Thanks for the input guys.
I'm just being a cheap b@st@rd and would shell out another 60 for hub spacers quicker than $$ for new wheels and tires. I only paid 90 for the 1" H&R's and 150 is still on the cheaper side for the offset I'd acheive.
But you're right, they are kind of a waste when I should just save my pennies and do the job right.
RT, thanks for the lead, I'll check them out when I save some scratch.

Your wheels are where you should really look to add some width. Like others have said...go with some different wheels. Don't keep looking for ways to push the stockers out there. Sad fact is- if you want to fill out the wheelwell, those wheels aren't gonna do it.
Pay the bucks and get some staggered rims. They're expensive, and complicate tire purchasing and rotations, etc., -but they'll fill that gap.Spacers, shims, and all that can only do so much safely...thats why you don't see any 3inch spacer/bolt kits.
