Default Toyotas, Scions abound on new CR thrifty cars list

... And only two cars on the list were made in Detroit.

American consumers are showing signs of a shift in attitude, with a growing number of people making fuel economy a primary concern -- a potentially worrisome sign for Detroit's automakers.

More new car shoppers are looking for four-cylinder engines, while sales of V8-powered vehicles have fallen in recent weeks. Cars continue to regain market share from trucks.

And today, a survey by Consumer Reports, the bible of the big-spending baby boom generation, says 37% of people in the market for a vehicle want a more fuel-efficient model than they currently own, a jump from its previous surveys.

Default Actually just one

The Pontiac vibe is just a Toyota Matrix with a Pontiac emblem, They come off the same assembly line and everything.

Only difference is that they are sold with trims and paint that you can't get with the other brand

gm is still don't get it . they should be building more fuel efficient vehicles instead of offering $1.99 petrol for a year. what's going to happen in 1 year and 1 day? petrol probably will be $3.50 unleaded 87. another short-sighted gimmick similar to that "employee-pricing" deal just 6 months ago .

$3.50? Unless something happens, or E85 becomes more available and popular, gas will have topped out over $4 per gallon in a year.

Petrol, huh? Are you a fellow brit?

It's already been pointed out the Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix are the same car, but even the Focus was primarily a European designed/built car before Ford U.S. offered it for sale, so I would hardly give "Detroit" any credit for it.

Maybe the xA isn't CR recommended? Can't believe that's true, but that could be the reason.

And the only list the vibe as getting 1 more MPG than the TC? How hard were they driving that vibe?

nice how they don't mention that the vibe gt requires high octane fuel only since it has the 2zz-ge engine.

That's exactly correct, as I recall. The xA and xB were tested together, and the Box just barely made it into the "recommended" list, and the xA just missed. Both cars were severely downrated for high noise levels, weak acceleration, and harsh ride, but the xB recouped some points for back seat comfort and stability control.

Remember, CR doesn't give points for "cool."

^^^ The Vibe is produced in CA at the NUMMI plant (New United Motor Manufacturing Inc.)....along with the Corolla and Tacoma.

The Matrix is produced in Canada at the TMMC plant (Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada)....along with the Corolla and RX330/350.
