Default Lightest Rims that won't Brake to all Heck.

What are the lightest 17" rims that won't break to all heck? I'm thinking Volk or Motegi. Correct me if I'm wrong. Also include me with a model name and size + lbs. If you're really good give me tire weight too.

Hi Doc
I am running Volk LE37T Gun Metal 17"x7.5"wheels, Bridgestone RE050A 215/40r17 tires.I've hit a few potholes with no damage to the wheel or tire.I spent quite a lot of time checking wheel and tire weights before making my choice.I don't remember the weigh of the wheel itself but the wheel and tire combo weigh about the same as the stock alloy set up.I don't think you can go wrong with the Volk.Check out my profile for a look.

yeah for strong, lightweight wheels, you have to look for FORGED wheels, which RAYS does a lot of. One Piece wheels are also typically stronger than their 2piece or 3piece counterparts.

gram lights are another RAYS wheel line (i think?) that are very light and very strong.
i have the OEM 18" Racing Hart Evolution TRD's, and I remember reading that they were 15-16 pounds each ... which seems crazy light to me (can someone confirm?).

anyway, look for forged, one-piece wheels. also, as said above, expect to pay out the wazoo for a quality set. some of the lightest ones (10-14 pounds) will run you maybe $2000 a set.

eck! Motegi shouldn't even be put in the same sentence as Volk/Rays. Motegi is stuff you'd buy at Sears.

the lightest that Rays/Volk offers is the CE28N, next comes the TE37 model which is only slightly heavier then the CE28. Rays is also planning to release the Gramlights "57 Maximum" model wheel. looks similar to the Advan RG.

if you're looking for light & strong rims look into Volk/Rays, Gramlights, Advan, Work (certain models), Wedsport, BBS, SSR, O.Z. (certain models)

as someone else suggested, go with something forged. generally it'll be a 1pc. design to be the lightest possible.

bottom line is "you get what you pay for".

Default Don't Hate on Sears or Motegi...

Motegi 17x 7 rims weight are 14-15 pounds, That's pretty light and they are forged. Just because you can get them at sears doesn't make them a bad company or a bad choice. Don't get me wrong I love volks TE series too. Just trying to get an understanding of weight and offsets. I can get the motegi's/tires for 1600.00 plus shipping through tirerack. Anyone know how much stock wheels are? Weightwise. I just have plastic hubs...Ey PORISETO!

I found 17 x 7 Kosei K1 TS rims at www.tirerack.com and they show them at 14.1 lbs. I have no clue about durability though.

What about Sport Max? They do offer lightweight forged wheels, but they don't advertise that part much like when I checked a long time back. They have a 17 as light as 15 lbs http://www.sportmaxwheel.com/sportmax_003.shtml . Tirerack shows wheel weight for most wheels, don't know bout Discount Tire though.

EDIT: Ran into this wheel weight guide, outdated back to 2003, but half of the wheels listed should still be made tho. http://www.mx6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73737

Enkei RPF1
17x7 are 14.6 pounds
16x7 are 13.7 pounds
15x7 are 9.5 pounds

Does anyone know if these wheels are strong. I am planning on getting either the 16x7 or 17x7. Help me decide scionlife peeps!

Default Advice.

Get the 17 x 7.

A. Weight to Size Ratio.
B. Better Contact patch between you and road, So better Feel.
(GET A GOOD QUALITY TIRE, IF YOUR NOT A RACER GO AVON.)
C. MPG will go up if you're going lighter.

Downsides

A. Turn in Radius
B. Cost

What size tire, 205/45 or 215/40, which has the best ride and rim protection?

I would think the 205/45 because of aspect ratio. Taller sidewall number. They are prolly real close to being the same tho. I went 215/45/17 just to be safe.
