WSJ reviewer weighs in again on benefits of the xB
This is not new to us Scion xB owners, but this guy is a pretty well-known car reviewer.
I've just returned from Germany and Austria, and most of the cars I saw over there looked like cousins of the xA and xB. There's even a Mercedes that looks like a smaller, boxier Prius. And the little two-seater Smart cars are all over the place. Perhaps this is what the U.S. car landscape will look like in 10 years or so?

Q: I am a baby boomer looking to pass off my 1999 Nissan Pathfinder to my teenage daughter sometime next year. I am enamored with the Scion xB, to my family's horror. Any pros or cons regarding the Scion?

A: I'm not surprised to hear your family doesn't share your enthusiasm for the Scion xB. People tend to either like its styling or dislike it strongly. Still, the car has sold well, not only to its intended youth market but also to boomers looking for practical, inexpensive and stylish transportation.
When I drove the xB I was surprised by its practicality. Though small on the outside, it has about much passenger space inside as the Pathfinder -- just over 90 cubic feet. That translates to a spacious car with plenty of headroom -- even for drivers well over six feet tall. Compared with the Pathfinder, its ride may seem a bit noisy on the highway and harsh on rough surfaces. You probably will also sense that you are in a lighter vehicle and surrounded by less metal than in the Nissan.
The xB's 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine puts out just 103 horsepower compared with 170 for a 1999 Pathfinder, but the xB is likely to feel peppier because it weighs about 1,500 pounds less. Overall the Scion is a sharp design that's worth a test drive as long as you don't think your family will disown you as a result.
