Default Toyota Ratchets Down Tundra Expectations

http://www.autoblog.com/2006/09/14/t...-camry-produc/

While Toyota expects to see overall growth in the US market next year, the company is cutting production estimates for its new San Antonio full-size truck plant. Originally expected to start at its full capacity of 200,000 units per year, the automaker now expects to build 150,000 Tundra pickups there in 2007. To blame is a shrinking full-size truck market, led by high fuel prices and a decrease in housing starts (we've seen data that strongly correlates the housing market to pickup truck sales). Stealing sales away from the established leaders won't be easy, either, especially not with GM's new Silverado and Sierra hitting showrooms ahead of the redesigned Tundra.

The Toyota lots are full of trucks right now. Maybe it is just the sale they are running now, but when you look at the mpg on those babys you are happy you drive a Scion.

Yeah, I just bought a Tundra a week ago and the thing sucks down gas. The new 5.7L is not going to improve things (mine is a 4.7L) on the mpg front, but maybe the new Tundra is exactly what people are looking for in other parts of the country. We will find out.

The new 5.7L will get the same MPG as the current 4.7L, and the new 4.7L will be better (dual VVTi on both motors).

I am now the new Truck Manager at my dealership, so this is not great news. We'll be fine, I'm sure.

The diesel will debut when the Super Duty truck does, sometime late in '07. Heck, our 'light duty' truck will tow 11,000 lbs and carry 2500lbs - makes me wonder what a super duty will be capable of.

Watch out domestics.

And Sujeel, I think they just want to see when exactly my head will explode.

wow...i never thought of a toyota super-duty.....wow...

anyways, a 5.7L tundra would be nice...but it's MPG is still better then the domextics, and with a towing capacity like that, then they are in the market big time to compete with the domestic truck market

go toyota

all we can do is hope this gas for $2.19 a gallon will go even lower! Anyone think we can hit $1.69?

What would make you pay $18K for a diesel Corolla or Yaris? Is there an advantage to the Diesel other than improved gas mileage? You would probably never make up the 2-3K difference in price due to the improved mileage, so what would be the point?

I got most of my information from Toyota corporate and trainers over the last year.

It doesn't surprise me that some of it has changed. I only relay information that I have heard from reliable sources.

If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. I've done it before.

When I get back from Princeton next week, I'll adjust my posts to acknowledge the new info, as much as I can (barring any legal action).

Come on, Scionslinger, what did you find out?
