recommended rear or back spacing for both front and rear

recommended rear or back spacing for both front and rear
Is it 3-1/2", 4-1/2" or 5-1/2"? I assume it's different for front and rear since the rear seems to be able to accomodate a wider rim size. Any info would be appreciated!
