Toyota to Detroit: We will bury you
You can see where the industry is going by looking at the features of this Lexus...

"... the new top-of-the-line Lexus has a feature that allows the car to park itself, with the driver playing a minor supporting role...
The LS 460 has an eight-speed automatic transmission -- an industry first -- a state-of-the-art aluminum V-8 engine that cranks out 380 horsepower and is expected to get 19 miles to the gallon in the city and 27 miles to the gallon on the highway... The long wheelbase, limo version of the new LS has an optional climate-control system that uses infrared sensors to detect whether occupants are overheating. The car has systems that sense a crash coming and prepare the brakes and airbags for impact -- a system similar in intent to one available on top end Mercedes cars...
The Lexus LS 460 represents, in one elegant package, most of the reasons why Toyota is widely expected to become the world's No. 1 auto maker sometime within the next two years. It is a technological tour de force by a company that, relative to its strapped U.S. competition, has bottomless resources. "

We just had a rep get back from Indiana to take a look at the new Tundra. Ladies and Gentlemen, you can officially mark down Feb. 1, 2007 as the day Detroit fell. Short your domestic stocks now, because as more and more news gets leaked, by the end of Dec, GM's stock price will go from around 30/share to 23-26/share. Ford's will go from 8 to 5.5 - 6.5/share. By the time the public get to get in and get around in this thing, july 08 GM will be at 15 and Ford will be a penny stock.
I was told by the GM of Clair Scion (he's Jim Clair Jr.) that the new Tundra blew everything out of the water. He came back from a test session with the Tundra, F-150, Titan, Ram etc and said that nothing could even compare with the Tundra. He told me one thing that was funny. He said that they actually had to go out and buy 2 new Titans and F-150's because they actually broke during the testing. I mean they were brand new to begin with, and then they had to buy new ones because they couldnt withstand the testing.
new slogan:
Toyota > *
With the rust magnets that detroit is giving us these days, I see all american car companies (i mean most) to be out of business in our lifetimes.... Why spend 30k on a car that's gonna rust like a **** before you hit 60k miles? Toyotas lost longer than most owners want! lol! that means ppl have a single car for a decade without an issue! hehehee... that's a good thing tho!

I get to go see and test the new Tundra next week, and I can't wait!
Toyota wants to be #1 for sure, but they certainly do NOT want Ford or GM to go into bankruptcy. If they default on all their loans and suppliers under bankruptcy, then there will be MANY people out of work. Toyota wants people working, so they can afford to keep the economy moving. Toyota makes more of its working capital in the US then anywhere, so they have a real interest in seeing Ford and GM stick around. At least until they can buy them.
Toyota is more concerned about the Koreans in the near future. Hyundai is the next Honda. Honda should be concerned.

If the Tundra really is a better value than American trucks and they find a way to prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt to the Ford people, or the Chevy people, or the Cummins man, stubborn folks etc... then I'd imagine Ford will tank for sure. I doubt bringing the Falcon back will make a difference, and dropping the taxi cab/police car of choice certainly won't help.
Still, as dominant as Toyota looks... and i hope it stays that way, Korea is doing great things, and soon China will be here undercutting everyone, and a niche of people will support them, like they did Toyota back in the day. Then all it takes is Toyota having one run of bad luck, be it self caused, or influenced by other things like laws, regulations, etc. and history repeats itself.

I wouldn't imagine that China will be a big player in the US market for quite some time, ie 15-20 years. The quality is not there, and the styling is questionable at best, not to mention that there is virtually NO distribution network in place.
The big assumption here is that the customers will immediately see the superiority of the Toyota and buy one.
I doubt that this will be the case. There is still a brand loyalty nut to crack. Too many truck buyers, particularly those away from the coasts, identify themselves as a "Ford Man", "Chevy Man" or "Dodge Man".
They won't want to be the first in their peer group to be driving one of those furrin trucks.
Reminds me of a quote I heard a few years back:
The New South is just like the Old South except that everyone drives Japanese pickups.

Well living in Detroit I can say that regardless of how great the new tundra is, it won't sway most of Detroit from the (not so) big three. Also, you refer to big three rust magnets but you fail to realize that the paint on our Scion's SUCK and all the brand new Scion's here in Detroit will also be rust magnets after a few years because of the garbage roads and the salty winter streets.

I don't think so. Sure domestics are sitting on hard times, however don't count them out. Sure the new Tundra is way cool but this is not contender for Toyota. Truck sales across the board are slipping. This year alone sales have fell 15% and is predicted to fall further in 07. Try and get someone from Detroit or the Midwest to bail on his F150 or RAM and buy a Tundra. It's not happening.
