"... automotive eye candy like the xB..." I like that.

The biggest growth is coming in categories that once barely existed. Compact crossovers, less than 1% of the car and truck market in 1996, will be 8.5% this year, Power says. A new generation of young drivers are snapping up smallest-of-the-small subcompacts, such as Fit, Toyota (TM) Yaris, Nissan (NSANY) Versa and Chevy (GM) Aveo.
The "image compact," automotive eye candy like the Mini or Scion xB, made up less than 1% of car sales as recently as 1998 but will hit 7.5% this year, AutoPacific says.

with the fuel sipping, cheap to own, easy to drive nature of the honda fit and toyota yaris/scion xa and xb cousins this is no suprise (i would have included mini into that group however mini had a rash of reliability concerns early on and bmw's are pricey to fix)
There are just too many competition for the 5 door econobox.
However, the tC seems to be the only sub $17,000 sport compact for the equipment it has.
I priced a Chevy Aveo (Daewoo) and I got a fully loaded package with alloys and sunroof for about $14,500. Equiped nicer than the Scion xs but of course not having the Toyota quality.

well... i do miss my chevy silverado sometimes... but fuel prices are so unstable that i think some people may hang on to their sub compacts after they realise "hey...this aint so bad... its easier to park and i can fit it in my garage!"
I am a new XA owner which I will be getting in two weeks. I am getting rid of my Ranger to get the XA because of the fuel economy it gets, now the gas is going down. it is around $2.49 here in Portland,or. My mom and dad saw more hondas and toyotas at a shopping mall area. I'm glad that I'm getting ride of the Ford. I will enjoy my new toyota.
Big Oil just backed off on the price for the election, trying to keep their boys in charge. No matter how that turns out, expect prices to go back up and stay there come winter...
And, uhh, my xB has better rear seat leg and head room than many SUV's...
Land barges are on their way out as we become more integrated into the global economy, and have to pay the same as everybody else for petroleum...
A large part of european prices is taxes, but here in the US, it'll be pure profit...
