Default Massachusetts Law

Ok, so I'm driving home from New England Dragway last night. It's about 12:30 am, going down route 3, heading back to the Cape. I see a trooper on the side of the road, I drop it down to 60, and past by, just as he starts pulling out.

He quickly catches up to me, and rides in the left lane just behind me for about a half mile. Then pull to the right behind me, and throws his blues on. We both pull over. He comes to my window, and tells me the reason he pulled me over is because my exhaust is too loud. I mention it is a "Toyota" Exhaust system. I am then informed it is illegal to modify the exhaust system in "ANY" way in the state of Massachusetts. This was news to me. Does this mean every Scion dealership that installs the TRD is also breaking the law?

But wait, there is more. He then asks me to roll my window up half way. ok, now I know I'm busted. He goes to get his tint meter, and "POW", $250 ticket for illegal tint. Came out to 16%. At least he tells me the Magistrates will throw ticket away 99% of the time if the tint is removed and I appeal it. His parting suggestion was, "Don't forget to take pictures."

Which brings me back to the exhaust. I was a little loud running just the TRD. Now I am running that with the MMW headers, and it is damn loud. I hate the thought of getting rid of the header, since it is only 4 days old. What can I do to quiet it down some without losing too much performance, or go back to sounding stock. I want some tone, but not this much.

Suggestions?

A Resonator, resonator, and resonator! A bigger one would be better. Will clean up the sound from header and lower the tone of the exhaust back to a more respectable and legal level.

And this is what they hit you with:

"No person shall operate a motor vehicle on any way which motor
vehicle is equipped (1) with a muffler from which the baffle plates,
screens or other original internal parts have been removed and not
replaced; or (2) with an exhaust system which has been modified in a
manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the
exhaust."

from:

http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/90-16.htm

Its a new law that they passed in MA towards the beginning of the year. Im sure that MMW header makes your car sound LOUD, which is why he pulled you over. That and the dark tints, Tuner-looking, lowered, rims car caught his attention.

That sucks. He was obviously looking to harass somebody - I drove behind you from the track to 495, and it wasn't loud. I even had my radio off a lot of the way, just so I could hear yours (so I could know what mine might sound like, if I ever get the TRD from Jessica, hint, hint) - that and the fact that I think racing somehow induced the famous 'hatch rattle' in mine. I kept hearing something when I went over any bumpy sections, and was trying to see where it was coming from.

He might have also pulled you over because he saw the white numbers on your ride. And the trcs2 plate. Who knows.

Hey kdog, sosgal721 has an rs2, she's in Rochester (RIT), and doesn't have tint - she even has a pedestal spoiler, and personalized MA plates, same as Kent's - their cars are almost twins! Help a brother out, and snag some pics of her car so he can show the judge, and won't have to remove his tint before Exposed.
Hurry up though, she just posted in a thread about tinting, says she's thinking about it

Steve, you are a god damn genius. But I've been thinking, I might just run off and go with legal tinting on the door windows. I was thinking of taking pictures of me removing the tint. So maybe I need to run to Rochester, and get some "before and after" pictures The thing is, I need to send my appeal in 20 days. Even if I send it today, the hearing won't happen before Exposed. So, I'll have tint at exposed no matter what.

Run to Rochester? What a coincidence! I just happen to be going on Friday, and to RIT no less! Give me your second plate, I stick it on her car, date stamp a photo, and .... "yes your honor, I learned my lesson and removed the tint immediately, as you can see from this photo taken exactly one week after I was cited"

And it just so happens I keep a 2nd plate in My car. I hate the thought of giving up My Nagano, tC plate. I'm gonna have to find a place to meet up with you this week and swap the plate. I just hope to God the magistrate isn't a SL member. *goes to check mapquest*

"No person operating a motor vehicle shall sound a bell, horn or other device, nor in any manner operate such motor vehicle so as to make a harsh, objectionable or unreasonable noise..."

LOL, they're outlawing horns entirely!

Good thing summer is over - next time I see an Ice Cream Truck, I'm callin' the cops. They violate every aspect of that law, all at the same time!
