Default Tuner lug nuts: closed or socket style?

Hello all. I need your opinion.

After upgrading my wheels to Motegi MR7, I had a problem with Discount Tires because they scratched around the mouting holes with the lug nut key. They used "Gorilla tuner lugs". I was told that DT don't sell the other kind, the open ones (socket style), because they are "dangerous" to use and over time, they could get stuck.

My question is, because the small mounting holes, I don't want my wheels to get scratched every time I need to remove the wheel/tire off the Box. I need the socket style because they are removed from the center, and the wheel it's not touched.

So, is it safe? Where I can get a good set of 16, good brand, quality? I've looking all over. PepBoys, AutoZone, Kraggen...etc. And no luck. They have sets of 20, but they look crappy.

Any comment or recommendation?

Thanks.

Search Muteki Lug Nuts on eBay. I know of a couple people that have used them and don't have any issues. I use Tuner/Gorilla lugs without any issues. Couldn't find a set of socket style that would fit the tiny holes.

I have the McGard brand of Tuner style lugnuts, but I'm **** about who touches what.
I put mine on by "hand" - no air guns -- and use a torque wrench for the final touch.
But I've also had the Goriila brand of Tuner lugs aswell. Sounds like someone was in
a hurry to put your stuff on. Are they going to replace the wheels?

I hate scratches

x2 on the McGards.

I have Motegi RT5's. I too was worried about how small the openings are. They fit just fine. The swivel seat washer is a great idea...doesn't tear up my chrome. Also, the locks are weight balanced to the closed end lugs. Great lugs, check out "roadrashouch" on eBay.

Oh, your original Q': I prefer the closed end/outer spline style because the open center ones will rust on the wheel studs.

And moonray is right on...by hand and then a torque wrench. NO AIR IMPACTS!

Hi you all.

Thank you for your comments.

Yes, they replaced the scratched wheels, and I made them put the wheels on my car by hand and to put tape around the key, to avoid scratches. They were not too happy about it, but hey, I'm paying for the service. Now...

I'm worry that when it's time for service, rotation, brakes check...etc, the people at the dealer will care less about removing/put back the wheels w/no scratches. That's the reason I wanted to go with the socket style lug nut.

You are right tanakasan, the open lugs can bring rust to the studs. What do you mean by "swivel seat washer"? Is that the "key"?

I guess I will have to keep the Gorilla ones and deal with it and just tell people to be carefull. I guess...

The McGards have a built it washer where the lug hits the wheel. It swivels so that the lug does not grind into the lug seat as you tighten it. The "washer" is attached so it does not fall off. Genius! Pricey, but genius! BTW, the lock/lug keys are only 3/4" diameter. Small.

Too bad they were not happy. "Thems your wheels!" Anyway, the key will always have the tape on it unless you remove it. Just be sure to try and watch so they do it correctly!

OT, long ago, I had painted my rear hubs. They were HARD to remove. I watched the guy sweat and swear. When I got home after a brake job, I noticed my rears smoking. I checked the adjustment and the idiot had tightened them wayyy too tight as retaliation.

First car, first brake job. Since then, no one touches the ride. I do brakes, tune up, oil change, shocks, stereo, mods-basically anything I can do myself. [/rant]

I think when it's time for dealer service work, I'm going to put the stock tires/wheels
back on the the xb. As far as the rotations I can do that myself in the garage.

some other tuner lugs that are hella spendy but REALLY good are project kics, they also have the tips that wont scratch the wheels.

also my sponsor enjuku racing now carries wheel sockets that have plastic on the outside so you wont eat your rim!
