Default Voluntary Recall on 2005-2006 Scion tC

TORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 24, 2006 - Scion, from Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., will launch a voluntary Safety Recall with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) involving approximately 30,000 tC sports coupes from the 2005 and 2006 model year. The affected tC sports coupes were produced from March 2004 to early March 2006. There have been no accidents, deaths or injuries reported related to this condition. The Scion tC is only sold in the U.S. market.

The seat-mounted side airbag and side curtain airbags on certain tCs may inadvertently deploy if the door for that side of the vehicle is closed very forcefully while the tC’s ignition is in the “ON” position or within 90 seconds of turning the ignition key from the “ON” position to the “OFF” position. There have been 17 cases of this condition reported.

Scion will mail owners of the involved vehicles a Safety Recall notification via first class mail early next month. Owners are requested to contact their local Scion dealer for replacement of the driver and passenger side airbag sensors upon receiving their notification. Replacement will be done at no charge to the owners of the vehicle.

Customers with questions or concerns should contact the Scion Customer Experience Center at 1-866-707-2466.

Wow.. talk about a potential injury if you were in the seat when it happened. Not as bad as a frontal air bag injury due to the way they deploy, but still a potential for one. Good thing they are catching it and correcting it.

Where might these sensors be located in the car? What would it involve to replace them?

I can't remember exactly which model it was, but 2 or 3 years ago one of the Subarus could inadverently deploy it's front air bags if the car's front tie-down hooks made contact with the pavement....like hitting a large dip or big speed bump, ect. I think the recall involved cutting the tie down hooks off.

That would be scary, indeed!

That would suck if that happened while one was driving.

Do dealerships HAVE to do this fix, or is it optional? I don't like other people working on my car, especially the interior.

We had one customer whose side driver bags went off when she was in a party. That was the only time I had EVER heard of this happening. Good that Scion is volunteering to do it, before it actually becomes a recall - shows initiative.

their was a thread on this a few years ago. probably long gone. the wind caught this tC owners door and activated the side mounted airbag. i thought this was "randomly" normal..

the G force of the door moved the sensor in such a way it saw it as an impact and deployed.

but then again most airbag sensors are in the center floor of the car.

make appointments all in advance. people are gonna panic on this one!

looks like the side air bag sensors are just in the doors? or are they in other locations as well?

does this recall involve all the sensors for all airbags? or just the side air bag sensors?

Well... I guess it just doesn't pay to slam the door of your car.

Yes, I'd love to deploy my airbags at random too. I just love cleaning dust and other debris out of my car.
