Default Need some opinions guys

Well, I'm wanting to two tone my car. I'd like the top color to be white but I can't figure out what I want on the bottom. There will be graphics splitting the two colors but I'm not sure what the other color will be yet. Anyone have any suggestions or a pic for reference? I was thinking about keeping the top white but putting some blue pearl in it to help with some color up there but I dunno yet.

White can go with almost anything. Remember that the door , hood and gate jamb area would need to be painted to do any 2 tone (especially changing the lower part of the car to a different color). A top surface 2 tone would likely be cheaper/easier to do as I feel it is possible to do the little painting of the upper door jamb areas etc without totally dissasembling the doors and tailgate (likely only have to take off the tailgate for good access there. To paint the lower part a different color total dissassembly of all 4 doors and the gate will be needed for a like factory quality job as well as removal and reinstalltion of the hood, fenders and bumpers. Oh yeah what about the engine compartment...all that white in there...lots of work to change that too. An upper surface 2 tone could simply paint the hood inside and out and the edges of the fenders at the hood and the upper door and gate paint (should be possible with minimal dissassembly).

I am completely color changing My white box soon. Hopefully I can explode it and put it all back together again The engine compartment is certainly going to be a pain in the ****. Contemplating powertrain removal...But I think I will find a way to work around the engine/tranny and accept the results (wont be able to do a perfect job with the powertrain in place I feel).

The issue with changing color on top is we would technically have to take out windows to do it correctly and we just don't have the time to do that and have the job done in time for our show. That's why we are doing color on the bottom. Painting jams and everything on the bottom is not a problem at all. We will be repainting the white on top in the jams and all anyway but we just won't be taking out the glass like we normally would.

you don't have to take out the glass, about 90% of the time bodyshops don't remove glass when they have to paint an area, if I two tone mine we won't be removing anything but the windshield, and only that because it will be the perfect time to replace it

Yes I know you don't HAVE to take out glass but it's better that you do. My painter takes out glass if he's doing a color change. If he's painting the same color, he normally doesn't take out glass unless he absolutely has to.

well I'm going to see if the dents from the lawn company at work's mower will be covered under comprehensive, if so, once I get the tax rebate I'll have it two toned and the windshield replaced(and dents fixed) all at once

As far as glass removal for painting goes. Some glass and mouldings can be left in place without compromising the quality of the finish. The tail gate glass and the rear 1/4 windows on the XB are examples (scuff pad well in the groves mask well and be sure to get coating in the groove when you paint). On many cars with rubber mouldings around windshields etc varying types of lifting tapes can be used to lift the edge of the moulding from the surface so paint can get in under it (also good if you can get enough gap to really get the paint in under it well). Then you come to those windows mounted like the XB windshield. The edge of the gasket sits hard against the windshield posts and wont move far enough to allow and masking scheme that would assure paint adhesion by the moulding. This moulding in order to truely ensure a lasting job must be out of the way, which means pulling the windshield. Yes visually acceptible results can be gotten by carefully masking this moulding edge, but there is a highly increased likely hood of paint adhesion loss at that edge where you masked (simply because it cant be well sanded or masked because the moudling fit is too tight).

It costs me $125 to have a windshield removed and installed by my glass man. the new windshield moulding is $44.50 list from Scion. I opt for spending the little bit extra to have a better than average job done.

see my plan is when I do two tone it, when I get the money and the paint I'll call my glass guy(I'll have a new windshield and everything waiting) and have him come rip out the busted one, we will paint it in a day, and reinstall the windshield

I think so too, I'm going to have to talk my boss into letting me leave it there over a weekend to paint it, that or I'll have to just spray it in the fire station, I'm going to reclear the entire car anyway since I have a body kit to paint, I need to learn how to do gold leaf and see how much it'll cost

My white box is going to get a top to bottom Pagan gold over Tangerine candy fade..using a relatively large metallic siver base coat. Paint purchased, practice painting in the works Hopefully by the new year I will have a "New" new box!!

Think it'd look ok with it being white on top with a blue pearl in the white and then a dark blue or a light baby blue on bottom? Almost the DuPont hot hues laser blue color. It's the light blue.

not really, cause its actually a standard toyota paint, and I get it half off (the 2 quarts of blue I need are only 100 bucks for the best stuff by ppg, versus the $200 price tag for normal people)
