Today on MSN I came across a pic of the RS4.0 featured for a Consumer Reports article naming the top and bottom ten cars for depreciation and value. Scion xB takes #3 and the xA is #9 on the top ten list!

I'm not at all impressed w/ the "value" of my box!!! I was going to trade my 06' BSP in on the RS4, but they would only give me $12,000 and I owe $20,000. They said the value has gone down alot, because there are so many now and alot on the Scion lots, not like over a year ago.

I checked KBB.com and did a check on the value of my wifes 05' just for fun. They said that I could expect around 12k if I traded it in and close to 14 if I sold it outright. I only owe 9k on it. I thought about trying to trade it for an RS4 but she hated the color and didn't want a higher car payment.

B) Accessories don't really add jack to the resale value on a dealer's lot. Sorry, it's true. In fact, if you had gotten a bone stock box, the trade in would have been identical!
C) It's an 06. You just bought it. The first 12 months are the biggest drop in value is the first year. However, if you bought your 06 box in Jan, or July, or Sept, the trade in value would have been the same, give or take a few hundred for miles. The good news is, at around this time next year, that 12k will still be good, and the year after that it'd still be close.
D) Fact: Dealers want to make money. Fact: Dealers make most of their cash on used cars. Fact: Used cars compete against new cars for sales. So, in order for the delaer to realistically market the box they were trying to buy from you, they'd have to sell and advertise it for less than a new one, right? How much less than a new one would it be worth to save in order to be worth it to buy used? The dealer wanted to pay you 12k, they'll spened $500 on recon and safety checks and all that jazz, and then, they'll put it on the lot for 16k. In order to sell the car, they'll end up discounting to 14, leaving them with a $1500 profit before paying commissions. But, they want to make a minimum of 2k on used cars, and most dealers average $3k on their used cars.
The major difference between the Box and other cars near that price range is in the second and third years of ownership when they don't drop in value by another 1/2. For example, take a Ford Focus at 16k. try to trade it in at the 12 mos mark, and you'll get 9k. in 24 mos, 6k. in 36 mos, 4k. A loss of 12k in 3 years (and most folks will still owe for another 4 years at this point!!!!). contrast that with the box, and 36 mos of ownership will bring you 9k, a loss of only 6k.

I don't understand how the tC isn't on the list of ten. Though the xA/B do hold their value very well (and sell for about the same if not more than a new one) the tC trumps what the smaller siblings do. Several tCs that have been sold here at Tucson dealers over the past year that I have been working in Scion have sold 4k+ over a new one... Some on our own lot! Amazing what it does to the value when the "Model Year End Clearence Sale" doesn't exist. Way to go Toyota yet again.
