Default paint for steelies and wheel trims?

Im going to paint my steelies to gun metal, or no-gloosy black.. which paint will work? any tips or special technique?

then.. just in case.. i want to paint some wheel trims I bought, right now I have the plastic ones that Autozone sells.. how I remove the silver paint? and which type of paint will work on the trim?

thanks!

I assume you want spray can paint. Duplicolor makes a durable line of spray can wheel paints in multiple colors. Steel Wheels is one of the names they use. Sprays good and is very durable. This paint can be used successfully on plastics also. you may not have to remove the current paint on the trim rings you bought. Indeed I would try sanding them (about 600 grit or a red scotchbrite pad) and painting over. Try a spot as long as the paints do not interact (bubble etc. ) spray the rest. If they do interact you need to try solvents to remove the old paint. Start weak and go stronger always checking to be sure the solvent isn't melting the plastic only the paint. When you find a solvent that works use it to remove the paint. After that sand and then paint again. Mineral spirits is a good starting place (a relativly weak solvent), next try an enamel reducer... and lastly lacquer thinner (strong solvent ). Good luck.

here is a pic of my tcm with painted steels / trim rings

i actually used a "ford red" engine paint (freebee)... the paint holds great being it is made to withstand high temp degrees and what not. i used 8 coats with a clear gloss finish.

good luck!!

Clean the steelies really good with soap and water. Give them a thourough wipe down using rubbing alcohol and green scotch pad. Repeat using papertowel and rubbing alcohol to remove any residue. Prime, then paint.. and be done.. this works very well. For trim rings stick with polished stainless ones.. they will not rust and turn green like the plastic chrome ones. They will run true, not like the cheesey ones on the market. Good luck and post up pics.. I am thinking of doing my steelies in gun metal or silver also.
P.S. The duplicoler wheel paint will work great for this application .. If you want a gloss finish dont forget the clear coat.. if you dont, there is also clear that comes in matte finish but not in duplicolor.
